I am in my late sixties, I have always been interested in drawing, especially utilizing the perspective lines and drawing buildings. I currently driven to learn more and do more drawing, the only drawback is, (what you have discussed), is the time and scheduling a proper time to pursue my interests. I discovered your website, through random searching of the internet. Thank you so much for the needed tips and motivation.
Glad it helps David!
When you don’t have much time, I invite you to try drawing with thumbnails.
As you like perspective, you may draw some little rectangle like 4x5cm, draw a scenery in front of you. Just a quick rough. Only catch the essential: Perspective lines, main volumes and add in a little bit of characteristic details for the mood.
Example: If it is New York, add details about the skyscraper, the taxi signaletic, the stand of pizza or hot dog.
If it is Chinatown, the details would be about the Chinese characters.
Remember to add a few silhouettes of people to make it livelier. 🙂
Each thumbnail should take you no more than 5 minutes.
3 minute is a good time.
Hope it helps you to draw more often and having fun!

Hey Irene,
Scale and perspective are all about proportion.
Here is a very quick TIP to get better at proportion using halving technique instead of incrementation.
Check it here: https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/sharpen-your-sense-of-proportion-tip-153-video/

Today i’m facing the problem of using too much the computer and far too little the hand drawing sketches that let the creativity flow, so my problem is kind of a designers block.
I would like to hone my skills, get challenges, probably kind of what inktober challenge does for artistic drawing. Done inktober for some years now, It’s great to shake off the rust and keep relevant.
I am from British Columbia, Canada. I would really like to improve my ability to visualize in 3D. I found you on pinterest
That’s awesome Joanne.
A little TIP that you can try to practice daily is to visualize things in transparency.
https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/tip50-train-your-3d-vision-seeing-anything-in-transparency/
Imagine any object you see as if it was made of transparent plastic.
Because these invisible lines are the ones you will need to draw them.
Observe in 3D so you can draw in 3D. 🙂

I just started reviewing The Design Sketchbook. As a former college professor, I absolutely love it. Excellent job. The designer(s) get a 100%, A+, GREAT EFFORT, for the hard work that went into creating all of this material. It has inspired me to move forward with my plans to learn how to use my drawing tablet, design sketches, and eventually publish on my own self-designed website!!! Thank you for all that you did to create this material and to make it available to us who are new to drawing and sketching on a tablet. I have so much to learn in an incredible short period of time, but the materials and tutorials that I found on line this week and today will shorten my learning curve, drastically! I wish you continued success in all your future endeavors!
Hi Vera Lee,
Yes, you can publish your work and evolution creating your own website!
That would be a great journey :))
Which graphic tablet have you choose btw?
Cheers.
Chou-Tac
I got a drawing tablet (The Picasso P2X11). I live in Texas, and I’m a former college professor, but I recently took early retirement at age 62. I’m interested in designing a program to help adults and students of all ages to learn new things (easier and faster by working smarter, not harder). In this age of technology, I will have to redesign my former lectures by sketching them and then posting online. I taught thousands of new students how to study and how to use learning strategies in order to assist them with being successful college students, and to ultimately graduate. I discovered this site, as I was searching for tutorials on how to draw on a tablet and how to sketch! I want to design my own website in order to share my knowledge with others!
Ho I see: Picasso P2X11.
Thank you for the discovery. I see it is a screen tablet that is very affordable!
I remember when I started, these was so expensive! I am glad that more people can jump on these amazing digital tools.
I am an architect and love industrial design. I want to improve on my design sketching skills
Thank you so much, I’m starting to get the hang of this, so thankful I found this website!

Hello
Hello Froke.
I am from Pennsylvania, USA. I am 51.
I just love brining a memory or image to paper to never be forgotten.
I stumbled upon the blog while searching perspective ellipse.
I’ve been studying on my own for quite some time I’m hoping to fill in the gaps that I am missing being self-taught.
Thank you for this blog it seems to be packed with great info!
“I just love brining a memory or image to paper to never be forgotten.”

I am from Michigan, USA.

I would like to start urban sketching or plein air painting but as of right now I can’t draw what I am looking at so I’d like to learn how to draw.
Your page came up on my Google feed as something I might be interested in and so I clicked to check it out!
My main problem I can’t grasp is perspectives. I feel like I could get better at drawing most objects if I really practice but I don’t understand how to get perspectives correctly.
Hi Tawnya,
The Designer Starter Kit will definitely help you get started with perspective.
It covers 1 and 2-points perspective. Follow step-by-step instructions to draw your first cubes with confidence.
Design sketching all start from here. 🙂

I stumbled upon your youtube video.
I am facing difficulties to make a quality sketch and highlight important details.
I want to learn how to create perspective of certain elements and understand the sketching process itself.
Hi Mihailo,
When you draw yes it is about technique, but first of all observation.
To get better at drawing details, a great trick is to practice drawing them BIG.

– I’m certain that drawing is the best way to express myself and how I see the world.
– I’ve been searching for perspective drawing tips on Google.
– I’m struggling with perspective, values, and general drawing/shading techniques.
– EVERYTHING there is 🙂 But let’s just start with perspective.

Hi,
I`m french, 58 y.o.
I`m a ceramicist and need to learn to sketch better (straight lines, symetric curves etc) in order to prepare my work (vases, cups, bowls…)
I found your blog through another blog 🙂
1. South Africa, 39
2. Life long ambition
3. Google
4. Knowing where to start learning how to draw
5. Fundamentals to practice
I’m 25 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania I came from YouTube. I landed here because both hyperrealism and realism fascinate me. I know people frown upon both, but whether a landscape, architecture, or portrait, being able to draw exactly what your eyes see and make that moment live eternally with you would be lovely. I’m a fresh beginner, so seeing the world in 3D shapes in 1, 2, 3, and 4-point perspectives and simply converting them to their most basic shapes is something I’m currently struggling with.
I’m from England. I’m 66.
I want to learn to sketch so I can do something creative and portable.
I’m 16 years old, and I’m from Brazil
I want to learn how to sketch because I’ve always liked drawing, and I draw quite well, but at a very amateur level, That’s why I want to improve and sketch more of my ideas than I could before.
I discovered your blog through a YouTube channel called Ricardo Yamaguchi
The problems I face with the drawings are:
Well… basically everything, to be honest, the line, the proportion, and also how I can start from scratch
What I would like to learn from the blog:
Make lines more confident and less curved
Learn about forms and their benefits
and more…
(Sorry if my English is bad, I’m still learning…)
Je viens du Québec. J’ai 77 ans- J’ai toujours voulu savoir dessiner. Maintenant que je suis a la retraite je veux m’y mettre. Il n’est jamais trop tard

Hi Steven,
Do you have any specific questions eventually? 🙂
I’m Drawnner (fictitious name), I’m from Brazil and I’m 16 years old. I want to learn to draw with the main objective of bringing my characters and ideas to life. I discovered your blog on YouTube. I’m a beginner, I don’t know much, I’ve been training for a few days and I feel like I’m doing well… I think. With the blog, my goal is to get better at drawing, to be able to draw incredible drawings and spread them around the world. If you read it, thank you for your attention.
Hello Drawnner,
What matters is keeping nurturing your curiosity, your level will rise 🙂
I can feel your great energy. Keep studying with that passion and eager to surprise the world with your creations!
That is the key.

Hey Andre,
It is always exciting to start a new journey.
Keep discovering and practicing daily what you learn.
Draw with fun, and you will progress.
You will see how the more you progress, the more you will be confident and eager to level up your drawing skills. 🙂
PS: There is no end. That is why sketching is an amazing lifetime journey.

Hello my name is Faith from Nigeria, I am a computer science student,I normaly have ideas about products but don’t have idea about how to explain it because it’s just in my head, I researched and discovered industrial design. Although I am good with using generative AI method but it can be limiting. Hopefully this ebook will give me a good start.
Hi Faith,
I am glad you decide to explore sketching after experiencing AI and its limitations.
Learning sketching will definitely give you wings!
And when you will combine both Sketching + AI,
you will will be happy to communicate your ideas in your head visually. :))
I’m francesca. I’m 79 years old. I live in Chicago. My dad was a good artist. I liked to draw when I was young but was not very good. I’d like to try sketching.
Hi Francesca,
Sketching is a great way to express your art fast and with plenty of expression.
Good or no good,
the most important is you have fun.
Having fun is the greatest shortcut to express your ideas and imagination!
That will naturally fuel your desire to learn and improve more day by day.
Hi, I’m 55 and in Las Vegas. I’m a paralegal and I started doodling on my ipad during the pandemic. Got into neurographic art (got some pretty spot on predictions from this), and now into sketching on paper. I can’t wait to paint on canvas! I’ve always loved art and always had the desire to draw but was always intimidated. Practicing everyday helps. My problem is that I’m not good with lights and shadows and I’m self-taught. I’d love to learn to draw anything and everything. I found your blog because I was looking to see which brand is the best for ballpoint pen sketching. I’d love to have a book full of sketches that I’m proud of.
Hello Carony,
Thank you for the Neurographic art discovery. I didn’t know about it.
You said you feel intimidated sometimes. This morning, I was reading in the book Daily Creative (Todd Hennry) about starting from a random stroke.
Basically, we always wonder how to start, and we feel afraid of sabotage the white canvas.
To unlock that, just set you start with a random stroke, touch of colors for example.
As long as you start, your journey of filling your book full of sketches is on the way! 🙂

Hi, I´m from Portugal, I’m 50 years old.
I´m an architect and I have been drawing since I know myself but have a few hangups regarding drawing and sketching.
I found Design Sketching a few years ago ( I was already fascinated with automotive design drawings I saw every now and then) so I started looking it up on the internet and bumped into your videos and blog.
Problems:
Getting myself to practice more and become more fluid not so caught up in perfection…
learn more techniques to get my drawings more “realistic” without going into too much detail.
Hi Nuno,
Glad you love the art of sketching.
I also enjoy rawing things without going too much into details, and whenn suggesting things become beautiful.

Hi Andre,
It is ok to do mistakes.
We need to go through them, no matter our age.
Age does not make us better in drawing.
Practice and study yes. 🙂
Don’t be too harsh on yourself.
Embrace mistakes as a daily lesson to keep improving.
We all do!

If you can successfully convey your ideas, it matters most.
Then, if you can better draw them, your visual communication skills will surely skyrocket! 🙂

Hi Kate,
I like how you describe your goal in (2).
Hi Chou-Tac
I’m Tracy from Australia. I’m in the Interior design profession as a design researcher and creative strategist but since I don’t design ‘spaces’ as such I have never learnt how to sketch or draw. Now I feel it is a real lack, and so I want to get started.
Now I cannot recall how I found your site. I have been trawling through a zillion design sites over the past couple of days looking for resources so I’m not sure if I clicked a Google link or found a recommendation from another design site – sorry!
I would like to learn some basics and find the motivation to start practicing so that I can eventually help our design team to also embrace sketching as an important tool in their design tool-box.
Thanks!
Hello Tracy,
Sketching will definietly help you to push further your imagination and communication with the team.
The more you sketch, the more fun it becomes!

I am 65 years old from Scotland and now have more time on my hands for hobbies. I started to draw to pass the time and found it quite therapeutic. Having watched a few tutorials on Tik tok etc, I realised there was more to drawing re the use of shapes as starting structures etc and now becoming more interested but wondering what pens and materials to use, I typed in the search engine and your starter kit popped up
Thanks

I am a Product design student from India . I have average sketching skills and I feel handicapped whenever I’m asked to make a digital rendering or sketch of my ideas . I really need to learn to use photoshop .
Hello Sanjana,
Keep up learning how to sketch.
For Photoshop, a good trick is to keep it simple at the beginning.
Focus on black and white shadow using a simple touch of brush, and adjust with rubber.
I cover this quickly here at the end of this video: https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/how-to-multiply-your-ideas-with-the-random-product-technique/
Hope it helps!

Hi! I am 40 years of age and come from Alberton, South Africa, I am currently doing Multi – disciplinary draughting and would like to expand my skills and knowledge, I came across the content on YouTube and found it interesting because as a mechanical draughtsman, most of the drawing I am exposed to is strict, linear and non-expressive kind of blend so I want to explorer the techniques and methodology that product designers and industrial designers use to enhance my skillset
I’m from Ponchatoula, La. And I am 63 years old. I am out of praciting. I graduated from Louisiana Southern University at 2008 with art major. I found this program by browsed the google.
I lost my talents in Art. I really want to learn to draw realism by free hands. I’m terrible in sketching. I have so many creative pictures in my mind, but I can’t put the pictures on canvas. I lost it.

I’m in the US and I’m 75. I was an artist as a young child and into my 20s but life got in the way. I’m interested and starting over just for the love I once had drawing and painting. I was on YouTube looking for some drawing exercises. I want to learn more about perspective.
Glad you are back on track on drawing and following your passion Marian.
Im 29 years music producer from Kenya.I had started learning the drawing and design few years ago but due to environmental change,it forced me to focus on the art of music production and vocal coaching although i still felt the desireand passion of learning and knowing the product designing.thats when i bumped into your video on YT about product sketching.
Hope you have fun learning how to draw with the blog Victor.
I’m 26, from Mexico. I’m a 2D animator but I struggle with how to draw forms that feel 3D and have the correct perspective,
I want to be able to sketch forms from imagination and that they feel solid and believable. I want to be able to sketch a lot of things from life and from my mind. While searching on youtube I found your video about how to sketch the basic forms and it was really useful so I wanted to see your blog and learn more.
I think my major problem right now is that I can draw the gesture of an object and understand their form somewhat right but the perspective is always off or I get confused about how to see the perspective at all
Hey Den,
Yes drawing by practicing your 3d skills is gonna be awesome for your 2d animation projects. 🙂
I’m currently in Connecticut and I’m 49. I’m how to design furniture and want better visualize my designs. Came across your blog during a Google search on resources on design sketching.

I like to learn sketching more effectively so I can sketch from any angle under my imagination so that I can design more effectively
I was browsing web and somehow come to your site: the content looks good and I’m in!
Problem:
I can sketch but can’t sketch effectively enough, in particular from any angle or perspective. Also I am good at draw via observation but am not familiar with more rational approach such as those sketching skills used in product design.
Hi Sam,
Yes, there is a difference in techniques used to draw via observation and drawing with a Designer point of view.
I share this ‘confusion’ on this video tutorial:

I like to repurpose junk and turn it into useful products for myself to use. I spend to much time realizing after days of trying my ideas are flawed. Hoping if I can draw it I won’t waste so much of myself being a failure and maybe just once have an idea, have the materials and with a planned sketch actually do something right. Perspective grids make sense but drawing the thing on the grid doesn’t. Can’t even get a box to go right after hours and hours and so many videos. I googled PDF download on product design perspective
Hi Cheryl,
Drawing will definitely help you visualize and test multiple proposals fast.
I have published recently a video on how I recommend you to draw something new 4 times. The 1st time being an “ugly sketch” to drop down the main elements without worrying about perspective or details.
Then you will redraw a better version of it. And so on. 🙂
It is called “Iteration”.
And that remove the stress of doing perfect sketches.
Try this:

Hi Roshaun

Yes, knowing how to break down things into simple forms is the key!
To help you go from 2d to 3d, you got to start with perspective.

I’m a 78 year old small business electrical contractor that works a lot in renovation/repair and normally I use marked up pictures to show my proposals because I don’t have an artistic bone in my body. Up until a day ago I didn’t know about 1,2 or 3 point perspectives. Suddenly I’ve discovered that it may be possible to learn some basic sketching skills. So I started with an AI search and went from there to here.

Hi Christina,
Welcome on board 🙂
You are starting an amazing journey!
I’m from the PNW in the USA, I’m almost 30 years old now.
I want to learn to sketch figures, characters, and scenery/environments. Especially figures & characters though.
I’m discovered this all through YouTube.
The problems I’m facing are fist of all consistency in practice. I struggle to build the habit of drawings because I’m scared of failure.
From the blog I would like to learn how to draw fundamental shapes and forms, and how I can improve my general line accuracy in both traditional and digital media (pencil paper & tablet PC).
Hi Gabriel,
Yah I understand the feeling of fear of failure.
To counter this, you may think of which is more scary:
Fear of failure? or Fear of regret for not trying?
At the end of the day, you will realise you have everything to gain, nothing to lose at trying 🙂
Plus, by training with the right techniques, you will for sure do progress.
And the happiness you will feel for every small victory will give you the courage and motivation to keep going.
I’m not saying you won’t face frustration at all, but sometimes you will, and you will see them as challenges to tackle!
By the way I wrote a blog article I have just published about how to draw daily:
https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/draw-your-way-to-happiness-9-tips-to-make-art-a-daily-habit/
Hope it helps! 🙂

Hi. I’m Liana. I’m 58 and I live in British Columbia, Canada (the heart of the Rockie mountains). I discovered you on YouTube when I was searching for lessons. Thank you for your wonderful channel.
I’ve been practicing drawing and watercolour for four years now. I am very pleased with my progress but lately I am just not making time!
My biggest struggle is still perspective and proportion.
Thank you for asking
Hello Liana,
Wow Rockie Mountains, it might feel good to have such beautiful views. 🙂
For perspective and proportion,
you can go through the Designer starter kit for a great introduction.
After some good practice, it will become more and more intuitive, like a 6th sense. 🙂

My passion for design and detail
Hi Angela,
Welcome on board 🙂
Hi fellow sketchers, Byron from St. Louis. I looking to improve my ability to draw original furniture and product designs. I believe I came across an ad on Instagram discuss how to become a better artist so here I am. One of the problems I would like to address is transforming an ideation succession into usable drawings.
Hello Byron,
Oh, I do not do ad on Instagram. Glad to see you on the blog though :).
A TIP on drawing your ideas, is to do NOT start drawing the product itself.
Think of how people will use it, hold it, activate it and so on.
You ca start with some simple storyboard.
Then come up with an ‘architecture’ of your product.
It is like the main shapes.
Then only you can “sculpt it” to hone the design with details.
Hope it helps to better lay down your ideas to transition to a product.
Cheers,
Chou-Tac
Learning how to add details to make drawings more realistic and 3D…
Hi Laura,
Sometimes when we draw details, it lacks of definition.
It suddenly becomes messy at the small pieces of a product for example.
To help you draw details, train at drawing them BIG.
Your brain will start seeing things like in High definition in 3D.
After that, you will be able to draw them more precisely in small scales. 🙂
I invite you to see this article from my student AMY who faced similar issue:
https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/struggling-at-drawing-details-draw-them-big-tip-165/

I come from INDIA and I am really interested to learn to sketch in order for me to draw the craziest thoughts flowing in my mind and also to become a skill full person who has so much to teach and provide to the world .”It come to my feed ” <<to calm down your peak interest towards the people you show.
Thanks
Hi Devansh,
Wow that’s exactly what sketching is crazy about! We can draw and show visually our wild ideas!
Hi. I would like this for my son 34 years old, who in his teens and early 20s loved designing graffiti and many other things and was good at it!! Unfortunately he hasn’t done much for the last 10-12 years.
Hi Christ,
I remember a classmate in my design school. He who loved Graffiti and had also an interest for Fashion design.
The lines and smoothness he had in his Graffiti art was exported to his work for fashion. That was amazing.
Glad you wanna bring more exposure to your son about art and design 🙂
Cheers,
Chou-Tac
Hello, I am from Bulgaria and almost 40 years old. I’ve been sketching for a while, but I’m always looking for more ideas on how to improve my technique and relax. I found the blog from YouTube videos. The problems I face are the tight, boring sketches I make. Your blog and the videos you make are great and I don’t know what you can do to improve them

I love to doodle and sketch while I am on the phone with my clients (I am a DV Counselor). It allows me to focus more on what my clients are saying since I have ADHD. I found your blog by searching for shadow lighting during sketching.
I am pretty good at taking my time with my drawing but I need to learn the basics and practice, practice, practice.
Hi Jamie,
That’s an interesting habit you have to doodle when on phone.
I remember once, I learned that your doodles on phone have a meaning.
I just found this article talking about this topic:

2.I like industry design when I was a child.
3. searched form youtube.
Hey Chen,
How are you doing?
That is so cool you enjoy Industrial design since you were a child.
I myself discover it pretty late.
I went into product design after loving drawing Disney, The Simpsons as a kid… then growing up going to university studying business – where I learned that listening to customers’ needs matters first.
Somehow, I realised Product design combines both of these!

This is for my daughter who is 14- she loves drawing and thought this may interest her to include in her homeschooling learning.
Hello Paola,
That is great to initiate drawing techniques to your daughter.
Please let me know how it goes. 🙂
I do also believe children and teenager has totally the abilities to learn how to draw early.
It is like learning a new language somehow.
The earlier we grasp the essence of it, the faster we become fluent.
I believe our childhood innocence and natural curiosity makes us absorb knowledge like a sponge.
By the way, congrats for homeschooling your child.

• Hey hey! Greetings from Slovakia!
• I already know how to draw a bit good but it’s still important to learn the fundamentals and basics to improve cause I have still a lot to learn (which is basically everything)
• Don’t have one, always anxious to post anything until I won’t be better at drawing or have style (even tho I know they are not important things)
Hi Samuel,
Do not hesitate to post anything. Every professional started a beginner.
People will always encourage who are trying. And they will be happy to see you progress and go through obstacles.
There is no need to overthink showing your drawings.
Keep up learning your fundamentals of sketching, and you will naturally progress.

Hi Luis,
Architecture is a wonderful discipline.
I do believe that sketching in front of your client is a great asset to have, so they can visualize your ideas on the spot. 🙂
Sketching is perfect for you balancing fast communication of ideas and quality of the drawing.
Hi Pedro,
It is great to feel inspired by family. I myself was inspired by my brother when I was a kid.
Congrats for building your skills at copying. I do believe that you copy seeing things in 2 dimensions (using the grid technique maybe)
Now to create, you would need to learn how to see things. I invite you to watch this video tutorial on how to observe and draw with a 3 dimensional approach.

That way, you will be able to turn objects from any angle from imagination, and draw them!

I am a novice Industrial Designer from Mumbai, India. I recently finished my bachelors in Product Design but unfortunately I wasn’t taught how to do design sketching at school.
Lack of proper guidance in design sketching has made me face a lot of difficulties in communicating my ideas to my manager as well as my clients, and I had to rely a lot on CAD(which is slow).
While I was watching “How to draw Lines” video by Chou Tac, I was able to reflect back very clearly what I was doing wrong, right from Posture, Hand movement vs Arm Movement.
The interesting analogies through which he taught about lines is very insightful and
