  • Hi 🙂
My name is Paola Alvarez. I’m from Puerto Rico. I’m also 22. I recently graduated from Interior Design and Decor and am now studying Industrial Design. In my free time I record videos for YouTube on my Urban Glam channel which distracts me from university stress. I’m aspiring to have my own business and I saw you as a great door to help me do so. Thank you for having the initiative to share with us your knowledge for our growth as designers also. I’m very excited to learn from you. I really like your techniques on drawing. I would also like to learn if possible how to create a good portfolio.

    • Hey Paola, how come you started from Interior design and switched to Product design ? It’s quite uncommon no ?
Beside that, the book of the Designer Starter Kit also have a Spanish version. In case you are interested, let me know.
About the portfolios, there is no unique way to make them. I have written a couple of article about it, you may have a look here: https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/?s=portfolio – Hope it helps and have a nice day :).

      • Thanks! I understand English perfectly so the book won’t be a problem. Perhaps some of my friends might be interested in reading it in spanish. I’ll let them know. I’ll take a look at the article for the portfolio also, thank you so much.

As for my studies, I changed my bachelor’s degree because at the moment there wasn’t any for interior design so I thought product design would compliment that perfectly.

  • Hi Chou-Tac! I’m Lorenzo, an industrial design student from Italy. I have seen your works and they are awesome! I wish to become great like you. Keep up with your amazing work!

    • Hello Bobby,

My system tell me that you have already received the 2 first guides already. Can you check your Gmail account on the tab PROMO if you have one (Gmail has recently created a new version of interface with more tabs). Sometime the emails go there.
      > Anyway, I have already send the book to you already. 😉

  • Hi there
Thanks for this resource. I am considering graphic design and searching for my inner artist. Really hoping your book is going to get me across the line.

    • Hello KobieK,
The book will start giving you more confidence at sketching. Quite a good number of Designer relay on computer. I am glad that you wanna improve your sketching skills. It will help you explore more ideas – and being able to communicate smoother.
Take care and enjoy the 4 guides !

  • Hi, Chou-Tac, my name is Jason Lee from USA, and I am currently a graphic designer at a small private contractor company. I always want to do amazing stuffs with my passion in graphic design and illustration. Thank you for taking your time to this for us. And I’m looking forward to learn amazing knowledge from you. If you have time, feel free to look at my online portfolio site (jasleedesign.prosite.com), and let me know what you think.

    • Hello Jason,
I had a look at your portfolio. You make great pictures. Your work is neat and well presented. Appreciate to see your initial sketches of research as well. + I like your Octopus logo eheh.

There is something that may handicap your readers. If I am not wrong, you uploaded very high quality pictures of your work. So they take quite long to display. May I recommend you to adjust the display speed, you will make the recruiters’ visit smoother.
You might know that already: the screen resolution is 72 dpi. Keep your high resolution file for printing in 300 dpi.

For your resume, how about you make it more fun ? Be unexpected !
Even if a resume is made to be professional, you are first of all in a creative industry. Not many Graphic designers make original resume, so you can pop up from the crowd ;). For example why not display your logo on your resume ? It might give you more status.

Then you can also include some of your work in your Pdf file. Imagine that the recruiter print it out, he will have your work visible on his desk.

      Hope it helps 🙂
      See You Jason.

  • Hi, thank you for taking the time to do this and read about us. I live in Dubai and am studying to be a fashion designer.

  • Hello Chou-Tac. Thanks for doing this. I am retired but still practicing design. I always enjoying practicing various sketch techniques. I find, however, that I am doing more and more “sketching” in Solidworks. BTW, I have taken a couple of trips to Paris the last three years. They were the most memorable trips of my life. Loved it there and will be back in a year.

    • Hello Mecium,
I agree that sketching is a pleasure even though you use Solidworks, you enjoy making things from your mind. 🙂
Thanks for Paris. Where are you from actually ?

      • I am Jim and I live in Fort Collins, CO. I was an Industrial Designer for Hewlett-Packard and Agilent Technologies. I am currently retired but still working.

          • It is a great place to live. I’ve been here over 40 years. You are working in Singapore I understand. What kind of work are you doing? Are you there permanently?

          • I quit my last job to take some time for myself and the blog. After few years of travelling especially in China and Singapore, it’s time to take a break. I will be back in France soon, and see my family.

          • Beautiful area. It is on my bucket list as a place to visit. I am trying to learn the French language. It is a very difficult language to learn but I am determined to learn it.

          • Yeah french is not that easy, but people say its a beautiful language. 🙂 The best way to learn is to be there for few months, living with locals that are not good in english. That’s how my gf learned for 8 months (She’s from Singapore), and now we only talk in French !
            A bientot !

          • You are right. I am using Duo Lingo. I think it is far better than Rosetta Stone, and it’s free. But you need to be immersed in the culture and the language to effectively learn it. French is indeed a beautiful language. I am lucky in that my wife is a language teacher. Her primary language, after English, is German but she is also really good with French. And we have two close friends who are fluent in French and teach it as well.

  • Hi Chou-Tac…..I am DhananJay from India. I am an Mechanical Engineer and now studing transportation design….. I’m highly passionate about automobile and truly love its design process!!!!!!

  • A.G from South Carolina. Im a robotic technician at an auto-manufacturing plant. Im pursuing my bachelors in Comp Sci but will get my masters in ID. I enjoy the mechanics of a technician, but im a creative individual so i want to go into designing things that people use.

  • Ben here from the US. I used to sketch my ideas as a kid, then somehow lost it when people said my sketches weren’t good or there were “better ways” of communicating ideas. It’s been my personal goal to think through things visually again, and I find it much more efficient and enjoyable. I even created an app to help me learn it! So happy to read your clear and concise tips — thank you!

    • Hello Ben, yes sketching is a universal language.
If we are lost or we look for something in a middle of a foreign country, a little sketch can unlock the situation ! As you said, we communicate with fun. Tell me more about your apps :). See yah.

  • I’m Peter from USA, I have always been interested in design and for many years planned on going to art school. I love to draw but I am now a Patient Care Tech. at a local hospital.
