  • I’m from the U.S., and I’m in my mid 40s. I’ve always loved design and creative work, but I’ve never had formal training. Sketching feels like a skill that would help me express ideas faster and more clearly, whether it’s for product concepts, journaling layouts, or just for fun. I found it while searching for industrial design sketching tutorials. Your explanations and step-by-step breakdowns stood out immediately.

My biggest issue right now is confidence and consistency. I get overwhelmed when my sketches don’t match what I imagine, and I’m trying to build better fundamentals instead of giving up.
I want to learn clean line work, basic shading, proportion, and how to sketch everyday objects with speed and structure. I’m especially interested in understanding form and perspective so my drawings feel more intentional and professional.

    • Hey Brian,

Yes you are right, you can sketch for any reasons, from product design to journaling, urban sketching and so on. I am like you, I love drawing for all kinds of reasons.

I like to say that sketching is not Work. It’s a lifestyle.

That’s ok if you can’t get the result you want now. Like my friend artist Renata says: Be kind with yourself.

My Tip is when you got an idea, do not try to draw it succesfully from 1 shot.
First, draw a doodle of it, without perspective in mind. It’s what I call an UGLY DOODLE.

With experience they will get better by the way.
After having this, you got a much better picture of what you want. Then redraw, refine it with extra sketches.

That’s what we call ITERATION. That is the Designer Mindset you must aim for. Not a brillant drawing performance like the artists we see on Tik Tok and Instagram.

Keep up with the fundamentals of drawing!
And your work will become cleaner, better and expressive. 🙂

      Hope it helps!
      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • My name is Dustin, I’m 38 yes old and from Southern California. I want to learn how to sketch properly. I’m wanting to get back to the basics and relearn everything. I discovered your blog from Pinterest.

I am having trouble with not completing my drawings. Mainly because I start detailing while I’m laying down the outline and it has to be perfect. I want to learn all that I can from your blog. I am addict and in early recovery. I relapse when i get bored. I carry a Sketch pad with me everywhere to keep my mind occupied when I have nothing to do or I feel triggered by something.

    • Hello Dustin,
I see what you mean about getting too much into details early, and looking for perfection. It often leads to a long session of drawing, and slow achievement. The worst case is when you have spent hours on details and messed up something later! Arghh lol I remember how I felt about it. Hehe. It is pretty common, don’t worry – many go through that. The good news is it is ok when you’ll get more experience. However, from start, you gotta put this “bad habit” of early perfection beside and enjoy the phase of doodling thumbnails and then “Building a neater version with correct perspective, and main shapes first”.

The key is to think General to details. You will see along the sketching tutorials in the blog, I cover the main shapes first, then I come up with smaller details. Think of drawing like a Funnel.
Once you have that solid foundation, you can relax and spend all the time you want on details without stressing about messing up the basics.

      Hope it helps!
      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

PS: Love that you carry your sketchbook everywhere ready to draw anything :).
It’s something that also keep me busy and relax randomly too.

  • I’m from Germany and I want to learn to sketch or rather improve my sketching because I was always interested in it and always sketched random stuff when I was bored. Now I decided to improve because it is a useful skill for my own goals.

I want to learn more about how to draw things from different perspectives and also how to sketch difficult mechanical parts etc.

    • I realise it becomes harder to avoid interruptions, distractions though.
However, I agree, it is so much calm to draw. The flow state is like meditation, an escape to our own world,

  • I am from dublin Ireland, I’m 77 years of age, I want to be better at drawing as I am very interested in drawing sketching. I am retired and zi do some painting in acrylics

  • I’m a interior architect from Brussels and teach drawing. I’m always curious how designer structure a course. And I’m always keen in learning myself although i’m 58. I discovered you on the internet.

As an architect my intrest is to draw spaces. As a teacher I would like to have inspiration for my classes.

  • I am an old school architect(paper/pencil), age 73 from Canada looking to develop design sketching skills on an IPad Air I recently purchased. Discovered your blog on Pinterest.
Want to learn to design /sketch and enhance my computer skills.

    • Hello Larry,
Yeah paper and pencils are great, to draw on iPad, you can look for iPad cover for sketchers, it helps to give a paper feel on the surface. You have Paperlike brand, or the one I choose is “Rock, Paper, Pencil” brand. Feel free to have a look.
As you have an architecture background, I invite you to try these 2 apps on iPad: Concepts app or Morpholio Trace . Hope it helps!

      Cheers, Chou-Tac
