  • I’m 75 years old – I’m working full time in a school for engineering students. I came to this work from a prior career in a machine shop. Our students are makers in a project centered curriculum that requires them to propose original design solutions for problems described to by others. Sketches are often the best way to convey their initial ideas for possible solutions in order to get feedback and improved understanding of the problem under consideration. I want to get better at sketching in order to better help these students.

Today we are working on a prosthetic design to prevent thumb injuries that sometimes (more often than you’d think) afflict ski racers when a ski pole gets stuck in the snow and yanks the skiers arm while pulling the thumb that grips pole out of its socket.

    • Hey Kevin, thanks for sharing your journey.

      TIP:
You may not just want to protect the thumb but reimagine how to pull the pole easier eventually with your prosthetic solution.

The number 1 thing when you draw a product is to draw the people first.
Imagine different positions on how to pull the pole with the prosthetic solution. (Pull by 1 hand, 2 hands? Squatt position? Standing position?…)

Then start to take photos (hands pulling the pole from different angles for example). Use them as underlay and draw ideas of the prosthetic on top.

The first sketches don’t have to be drawn with precision, they can be very “ugly” but convey the main idea and function.

Then, it is good to redraw the doodles neater.
Think of it like a sculpture where the more you work on it, the more definition it becomes.

Last touch, add aesthetic features / codes that relate to the users.

      Hope it helps!
      Chou-Tac
