I was browsing my picture library, looking for a subject to draw for you guys.

I ended with that hostel front I took in picture in Taipei few years ago. I stayed there a couple of night. All the mattress was covered with leopard and zebra print… Pretty wild right ? :)

In this video you will see how I proceed to draw a building using simple techniques of proportion. I share with you a technique that you can use for drawing building, streets, furniture’s, rooms…

This is why I like to make some narrated videos to tell you more about what’s happening in my mind when I draw. If you follow well the steps given in the video, you can transpose them for any type of subjects.

How to draw an hostel ?

In pictures

There is a lot of details, but if you start decomposing it, it’s actually not that difficult.

How to draw an hostel - perspective divison technique 2Squeeze your eyes, and you will see that the front is a square.

After drawing some few lines on top of the picture, My mind is more familiar with the main proportions. So I can start the main sketch without using underlay.

It doesn’t matter if the perspective is not exactly the same as the picture. With the technique given here, the sketch will still look accurate at the end.

After dividing the front a few times, the front looks like a grid.

From there it’s much easier to import in the elements with a good estimation of the placement.

We have the general shape. It’s time to add some details ! Never start a sketch with the details. Or you may spend hours to make your sketch and realise at the end that something looks wrong.

I refine and add some value and patterns to give more life to the drawing.

Train you eyes to divide things instantaneously. You will draw faster and be able to analyse your subjects more accurately.

How to draw an hostel - perspective divison technique 13The sketch is in perspective, so don’t forget about the foreshortening. Foreshortening, is basically about: What is in front looks bigger than what is behind looks smaller.
