Frustrated by your Wacom Cintiq 13HD’s fixed position? Learn how to add felt pads to enable smooth rotation on your desk, boosting your sketching speed and comfort. A simple trick every digital artist should know!

The Challenge: Fixed Position from Rubber Feet

The Wacom Cintiq 13HD comes with rubber feet that keep it firmly in place, which is great for stability but limits your ability to rotate the tablet freely like you would rotate a paper while sketching by hand.

The Smart Solution: Use IKEA Felt Pads for Smooth Rotation

To mimic the natural feeling of rotating paper while drawing, I applied small adhesive felt pads from IKEA underneath the tablet, on top of the rubber feet. These felt pads act as smooth “sliders” that reduce friction between the tablet and the desk surface.

Benefits of Using Felt Pads

Add felt pad under your Wacom tablet
  • Smooth Rotation: You can now effortlessly rotate your tablet on the desk while drawing, just like rotating a paper sketchbook.
  • Maintained Stability: The felt pads provide controlled sliding without the tablet slipping away unintentionally.
  • Improved Drawing Comfort: This freedom lets you position your tablet exactly how you want it, boosting comfort and speed.

How to Use Felt Pads on Your Cintiq for Rotation

  1. Buy adhesive felt furniture pads from IKEA or any hardware store.
  2. Place the felt pads directly on the rubber feet of your tablet.
  3. Test the tablet rotation on your desk; it should glide smoothly while still feeling secure.
  4. Adjust felt pad thickness or placement if needed for optimal rotation comfort.

Try It and Experience the Difference

This simple accessory change transformed how I draw digitally—it offers the natural joy of rotating your workspace, increasing comfort and sketching speed. Try the IKEA felt pad trick yourself and share your experience!

Cheers,
Chou-Tac

  • Hi Chou-Tac !

I have another hack that will cost you nothing : you can turn your canvas with two fingers on your tablet and rotating them ! You can also zoom in or out with the pinch gesture like on smartphones. Of course you need to have touch enabled on your tablet (cintiq or intuos (for the recent models)).

You don’t need to move your tablet, just turn you virtual workspace !

    • Hello Odolyte,

Yes, nowadays we can rotate the workspace, even Photoshop ! Something that users of Intuos was waiting for super long!

Yep, my tablet 13HD doesn’t have the touch option.
Actually I do have it on my 22HD, but I deactivate it. I never use the Touch as it bother me. Sometime, I do some conflict with my pen so it’s pretty irritating. Hehe.

One of my friend who is designer and in love with Cintiq also never use the Touch option for the same reasons.

I guess it’s also because we started to draw on tablet before the Touch option exist, so it’s hard to change our habits. :)

Thank you for sharing the tip Odolyte.

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • Thanks Chou.I kind of like the sliding feel between the nib and tablet. The intuos seems to be a lot harder to have proper control than i previously thought.I use a lot of the touch input to rotate, zoom features and its pretty quick.

Also i’ve noticed that most tutorials on youtube doesn’t seem to rotate the canvas, not sure if its the best way to draw.

    • Yes the Intuos will take you about a week for your brain, eye, pen and screen to be calibrated together. It’s super awkward at start, but keep going, it’s a normal thing as everybody need to go through with such tablet.

Maybe people on Youtube do not rotate the canvas, maybe for a demo purpose or they are just not used to it.
If you master well the shortcuts and is able to use the rotate canvas function. then great ! :) I recommend you to carry on, especially with an Intuos.

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

    • Hello Rooben,

For Intuos, about the rotation, you will need to rotate your canvas itself. Impossible to rotate the tablet or you are going to become crazy :P.

I got a tip not to draw faster, but to get used to your Intuos faster.
When I started with an Intuos, I was disturbed by the “plasticky” contact between the tablet and the nib. So it was sliding super fast. So I taped a piece of paper on it to get back to the grainy surface.

I guess nowadays the new Intuos have a felt nib by default. Feel free to try both alternative and let me know what is best for you :)
