A Creative Discovery in Singapore

During a short trip to Singapore with my dad, I visited my favorite bookstore, Kinokuniya at Orchard Road. Every time I step into the “Movie” section under “Entertainment”, it feels like a treasure hunt for designer inspiration.

If you love design and movies, search for books beginning with “The Art of…”. These artbooks are gems for anyone fascinated by behind-the-scenes creativity. They feature concept art, storyboards, and visual development from masterpieces by Marvel, Pixar, Disney, and more.

SPIDERMAN INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE. The art of the movie.

Among the shelves, I spotted the last copy of “The Art of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.” I had just watched the movie on a plane—it was graphically stunning. Holding the artbook felt like owning part of that energy and creativity.

Why Artbooks Inspire More Than Screens

Every scene starts with a sketch. That one is amazing!

Though digital content is everywhere, flipping through a physical artbook is uniquely powerful. The tactile experience engages emotion and sparks deeper creative thinking. Each page tells a story about how artists build worlds from rough sketches to final visuals.

A Useful Designer’s Tip

Inside these books, look for the names of the contributing artists. If you admire their style, explore more of their work online. Study their composition, dynamic lines, and storytelling to enhance your own design projects.

Parallels to Industrial Design

Observing how characters and worlds evolve from sketch to polish mirrors the workflow of industrial designers. The early roughs capture raw ideas; refinement follows through experimentation—exactly the rhythm of great product design.

The art books of your favorite animated movies!

These artbooks are often wrapped for protection. Don’t hesitate to ask store staff to open them for you—it’s worth it. You’ll feel the excitement and creative energy that went into building each cinematic universe.

A Bonus Source of Visual Energy

Another movie that left a deep visual mark on me was Ready Player One by Steven Spielberg—the thrilling gorilla chase scene still flashes in my memory! (See below)

Final Thoughts and Motivation

Visit your local bookstore and look for titles starting with “The Art of…”. You’ll uncover sketching styles that may inspire your next project or design breakthrough.

Cheers,

Another visual impact I had also in the plane was from the movie Ready Player One, produced by Steven Spielberg. I can’t forget the scene when the gorilla is chasing the racers. Olala!
