Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works. – Steve Jobs

Following the article about the Book written by Chris Lefteri, Manufacturing techniques for Product Design, I would like to precise an essential notion that any aspiring designer needs to know. “To me, a great designer loves people. This is where he takes his inspiration from.” This is how Jonathan Ive* bring for the first time colourful computers – bringing over fun and love.* the designer with whom Steve Jobs created Apple products. Nowadays, the way a designer thinks and creates...

‘Making it’ Book: Manufacturing Techniques for Product Design

Let me share with you guys a book I bought a couple of years ago. It’s about Manufacturing for product designers. MAKING IT, from Chris Lefteri. Chris Lefteri made this book to be approachable for students who want to get a solid base without going too deep. I actually read this because I felt it was fun! It arouses your curiosity and makes it an easy subject to share and talk to non-initiate people without “appearing boring”. You don’t have to read every single page. You flip it and stop at...

TIP 56 | Sketching Big – The Secret for Improved Performance

The bigger is our drawings, the bigger our mistakes appear! I know how we feel at the start. We are not used to drawing big, and we are not confident at doing it. So we get naturally scared. We feel that a small sketch got a better chance to looks good. But if you want to improve, you will need to face your own mistakes. There is no harm at drawing small. But do not get too comfortable. It is really common to be trapped in that situation for months or years. We feel we can draw quite well, as...

How I Draw an Adidas Wedge in Under 3 Minutes

Remember to set up in HD ! An extra video of an Adidas sketch I did at Georges White Coffee at Penang Island in Malaysia. If you have already read [the Designer Starter Kit], you may notice how often I turn the paper. It almost occurs at every single stroke. “Remember to turn your paper, don’t draw like a contortionist!” I am using a standard writing/detail position for my pen grip (except at the very beginning of the sketch).  The sketch is quite small, so my hand/arm movements are quite...

TIP 55 | Urban Sketching – Find Your Perfect Spot & Make It Count

It was 2pm. I was looking for a nice spot to sketch. So I decided to go to the Jetty for the awesome view of the sea. However I underestimated the sun of Penang. I was walking toward the famous jetty under 30°C. The sun was above my head and there was no place to hide. I continued my way and loved the view. But it was so hot that I couldn’t imagine myself sketching long under that boiling sun. If I would do, I may end rushing and ruining my sketches. TIP#55  Get a nice spot at the right...

TIP 54 | How to Manage your Motivation and Avoid Costly Mistakes

Do you know that drawing is also about motivation management? I recommend to do not go into details too early. It is tempting but you need to resist. Work first on the main settings and make sure they are good enough to carry on. I rather do a major mistake of proportion at early stage, then redo. Than spending a lot of time on some beautiful details and realize later that the proportions are incorrect. Wasted effort. It may kill the motivation of the day! CHOUTAC CHUNG – Street of...

TIP 51 | How To Draw Anything For $1 and Never Get Bored

I started to take a bad habit. Looking ay my phone or Ipad when I get bored. And it happens multiple times in a day. Besides that, I am also part of people who think that kids today shouldn’t play at Angry bird, but instead playing marbles or hide and seek. I have the nostalgia of the period where we only need our imagination to entertain ourselves. TIP#51 Never get bored anymore with 1$ I reached Penang today, a pretty city of Malaysia famous for its Street art full of humor. I took my camera...

TIP 50 | Train Your 3D Vision: How to See Anything in Transparency

This is an essential skill that a designer need to train. If you want to be able to draw things fast and create from your own imagination, think in 3D. TIP 49 | Why Sketch Thumbnails (Instead of a Finished Piece of Art)

When you start drawing, your are often more focused on making a beautiful picture than getting a great idea. There is nothing much wrong about it as an artist. But let’s look at a Designer’s daily life. A designer has to allocate most of his time into idea exploration. A client is not looking for a beautiful drawing.  He will pay for a beautiful and innovative IDEA. CHOU TAC CHUNG – RESEARCH ON OUTSOLE SHAPE AND CUSHIONING Imagine that scenario.
