How to Make Your Sneaker Sketch Stand Out: The Magic of a Simple Shadow
Sketching sneakers can be super fun, but what really brings your drawing to life is making it pop off the page. One simple trick I love to use is adding a distant shadow beneath the object, making it look like it’s levitating.
Why? Because levitating objects add a sense of lightness and magic—like you can almost grab them with your hands. It’s a small detail but makes a big impact.
A Quick Story from My Design Journey
I want to share a little story about how I discovered this shadow trick. Back when I was a student, I spent hours browsing the websites of sneaker designers.

One designer stood out like a giant in the room—Arsenrock from Marseille, France. His rendering style was beyond cool—so innovative and so realistic!
Having such heroes to look up to is a huge motivation.
I worked hard, practiced tons of techniques, and slowly built my own style. Eventually, I landed an internship with the French sports brand Airness, designing sneakers!

Here’s the wild part: on my first day, I met Arsenrock—which felt like winning the lottery. The designer I admired from afar became my mentor and friend. Since then, we’ve been on a lifelong learning journey together. This shadow trick I learned from him is one of those gems I wanted to share with you.
The Simple Shadow Trick: How to Do It

- Draw your sneaker sketch lightly, focus on the shape and details.
- Then, add a soft, distant shadow on the ground below the sneaker.
- Keep the shadow simple and slightly blurred, like the sneaker is floating just above the surface.
This trick instantly adds depth and personality to your sketch and makes your object look alive!
Why Shadows Matter in Design Sketching
Adding shadows is more than just a creative flourish; it’s about creating a visual story. Shadows ground your objects in space and give a sense of dimension and realism. When you make your sneaker appear to levitate, you invite the viewer to see it beyond a flat drawing—almost as if it’s ready to step right out.
Final Thoughts
Design is a lifelong adventure.
Tricks like this shadow technique keep me motivated and pushing my skills. Try it in your next sketch and see how it changes the vibe of your work.
And hey, maybe one day I’ll convince Arsenrock to do an interview and share more secrets with all of us. Would you be interested? Until next time, keep sketching, stay inspired, and have fun!
