I am 40 years of age and come from Alberton, South Africa, I am currently doing Multi – disciplinary draughting and would like to expand my skills and knowledge, I came across the content on YouTube and found it interesting because as a mechanical draughtsman, most of the drawing I am exposed to is strict, linear and non-expressive kind of blend so I want to explorer the techniques and methodology that product designers and industrial designers use to enhance my skillset

  • Hi I’m Rani, 26 years old from indonesia. When i was teenager i really love drawing, i can draw quite good. The problem is i still don’t understand the basic, because back then i didn’t learn properly. I hope this book will develop my skill

  • I’m in the US and I’m 75. I was an artist as a young child and into my 20s but life got in the way. I’m interested and starting over just for the love I once had drawing and painting. I was on YouTube looking for some drawing exercises. I want to learn more about perspective.

I want to be able to sketch forms from imagination and that they feel solid and believable. I want to be able to sketch a lot of things from life and from my mind. While searching on youtube I found your video about how to sketch the basic forms and it was really useful so I wanted to see your blog and learn more.
I think my major problem right now is that I can draw the gesture of an object and understand their form somewhat right but the perspective is always off or I get confused about how to see the perspective at all

  • NC, USA, 39,
I like to repurpose junk and turn it into useful products for myself to use. I spend to much time realizing after days of trying my ideas are flawed. Hoping if I can draw it I won’t waste so much of myself being a failure and maybe just once have an idea, have the materials and with a planned sketch actually do something right. Perspective grids make sense but drawing the thing on the grid doesn’t. Can’t even get a box to go right after hours and hours and so many videos. I googled PDF download on product design perspective

    • Hello Chris,

Hope you find plenty of techniques and tips that will help your students.

Feel free to print the Designer Starter Kit for them if you think it can help them during your class.

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

    3) I discovered from the YouTube channel description from watching a design sketch video.

Bonus: the problem I have is being unable to transform 2d images into 3d forms. I’d like to build up my 3d visualizing skills.

  • I come from south africa and 19 years old. I really enjoy sketching as I find it as another way of expressing your emotions and also showing how you personally see the world from your point of view.

    • Hi Nqobile,

      Love your name!
It is the first time I see it.

That is a wise approach to art and design that I fully agree with you.

Teacher who uses art in most every activity.
Also getting a little older and noticing a decline in fine motor skills…since I love drawing especially just basic shapes and designs I want to learn to do so in a structured way.
I don’t remember how I came across your site. I think I was just Googling one day and came across your site. I really like your style of teaching.

    • Hello Amy,

That is great you are noticing your motor skills change.
Most people do not, and even if they do notice, won’t do anything to change the curve.

With practice, it will be all fine.
You make me realise that practicing drawing is somehow like going to gym regularly.

      See you!

  • I am 67 years old and live in the Netherlands.
To be able to sketch prototypes (technical) and maybe after that to learn drawing as art
    The Internet…

Not really progessing in drawing quality.

    • Hi Johannes,

I love the Netherlands and cycling around there. 🙂

Keep up with the sketching fundamentals. They are many small and simple techniques to learn.
And when you put them together, magic happened!

  • California, 27 (M)

I’ve NEVER been good at it – but such a valuable skill.

How everything is found these days – the internet!

    Biggest problem – I don’t have a consistent practice.
I’d like to learn: The basics at the very least. But I’m hoping this opens up and I can be a technical drawer.

    • Hi Pedro,

Glad you want to be back on track for drawing, that is an amazing journey!

Thank you for sharing the recommendation from Ricardo Yamaguchi.
I do not know him, and I am looking at his work now on Youtube. 🙂

Up until a day ago I didn’t know about 1,2 or 3 point perspectives. Suddenly I’ve discovered that it may be possible to learn some basic sketching skills. So I started with an AI search and went from there to here.

    • Hi Tom,

I am glad how it can help you in your daily activity as an electrical contractor.
You will see drawing in perspective is fun!

That is so cool you found me through AI. 😀

  • North Carolina USA
I want to learn in order to create better paintings
I discovered the blog by searching How to Draw ellipses, im taking an art class currently
My shapes are off and I’m not good at drawing
Learning all i can to perfect my drawing and sketching practices

    • Hello Ms Zulma

That is great you learn better drawing for better paintings.
That will definitely help you level up!

If you learn how to draw with a 3 dimension approach (such as product design techniques),
you will be able to create your own painting without reference for example.

  • Hello my name is Mariana Hensley I’m from Texas! I’m teaching myself how to draw and sketching is harder than I thought I discovered this on Pinterest

    • Hi Marlena,

      How is Texas?
If one day I move to the US, I may think of Texas.
People tell me great things about it.
But I have never been myself. (I only went to Cali, Boston, NY)

Glad you discover my drawings on Pinterest.
I hope you find tutorials you like on the blog!

  • I’m from the PNW in the USA, I’m almost 30 years old now.

I want to learn to sketch figures, characters, and scenery/environments. Especially figures & characters though.

I’m discovered this all through YouTube.

The problems I’m facing are fist of all consistency in practice. I struggle to build the habit of drawings because I’m scared of failure.
From the blog I would like to learn how to draw fundamental shapes and forms, and how I can improve my general line accuracy in both traditional and digital media (pencil paper & tablet PC).

    • Hi Gabriel,

Yah I understand the feeling of fear of failure.

To counter this, you may think of which is more scary:
Fear of failure? or Fear of regret for not trying?

At the end of the day, you will realise you have everything to gain, nothing to lose at trying 🙂

Plus, by training with the right techniques, you will for sure do progress.
And the happiness you will feel for every small victory will give you the courage and motivation to keep going.
I’m not saying you won’t face frustration at all, but sometimes you will, and you will see them as challenges to tackle!

By the way I wrote a blog article I have just published about how to draw daily:
      https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/draw-your-way-to-happiness-9-tips-to-make-art-a-daily-habit/

      Hope it helps! 🙂
      Cheers,

You kind message reminds me this, even though I am a very bad dancer!
      Hehe.

  • Hey! I am Robert, 39 years from Rwanda, I would like to learn more about sketching in order to build products, do interior design and do some architecture sketches as well. I have discovered the blog, doing industrial design courses research on Google.

  • Hey there✌️
I’m Deepak Anand and I’m 21 years old from India. I’m a industrial design student and that’s why I want to learn sketching.

  • Hi fellow sketchers, Byron from St. Louis. I looking to improve my ability to draw original furniture and product designs. I believe I came across an ad on Instagram discuss how to become a better artist so here I am. One of the problems I would like to address is transforming an ideation succession into usable drawings.

    • Hello Byron,

Oh, I do not do ad on Instagram. Glad to see you on the blog though :).

A TIP on drawing your ideas, is to do NOT start drawing the product itself.
Think of how people will use it, hold it, activate it and so on.
You ca start with some simple storyboard.
Then come up with an ‘architecture’ of your product.
It is like the main shapes.
Then only you can “sculpt it” to hone the design with details.

Hope it helps to better lay down your ideas to transition to a product.
      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • Hi. I would like this for my son 34 years old, who in his teens and early 20s loved designing graffiti and many other things and was good at it!! Unfortunately he hasn’t done much for the last 10-12 years.

    • Hi Christ,

I remember a classmate in my design school. He who loved Graffiti and had also an interest for Fashion design.
The lines and smoothness he had in his Graffiti art was exported to his work for fashion. That was amazing.
Glad you wanna bring more exposure to your son about art and design 🙂

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • Hello, I am from Bulgaria and almost 40 years old. I’ve been sketching for a while, but I’m always looking for more ideas on how to improve my technique and relax. I found the blog from YouTube videos. The problems I face are the tight, boring sketches I make. Your blog and the videos you make are great and I don’t know what you can do to improve them

  • Jamie Weaver – 38 years old
I love to doodle and sketch while I am on the phone with my clients (I am a DV Counselor). It allows me to focus more on what my clients are saying since I have ADHD. I found your blog by searching for shadow lighting during sketching.

I am pretty good at taking my time with my drawing but I need to learn the basics and practice, practice, practice.

    • Hey Chen,
      How are you doing?
That is so cool you enjoy Industrial design since you were a child.
I myself discover it pretty late.
I went into product design after loving drawing Disney, The Simpsons as a kid… then growing up going to university studying business – where I learned that listening to customers’ needs matters first.
Somehow, I realised Product design combines both of these!

  • This is for my daughter who is 14- she loves drawing and thought this may interest her to include in her homeschooling learning.

    • Hello Paola,

That is great to initiate drawing techniques to your daughter.
Please let me know how it goes. 🙂
I do also believe children and teenager has totally the abilities to learn how to draw early.

It is like learning a new language somehow.
The earlier we grasp the essence of it, the faster we become fluent.

I believe our childhood innocence and natural curiosity makes us absorb knowledge like a sponge.

By the way, congrats for homeschooling your child.
      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • • Hey hey! Greetings from Slovakia!
    • I already know how to draw a bit good but it’s still important to learn the fundamentals and basics to improve cause I have still a lot to learn (which is basically everything)
    • Don’t have one, always anxious to post anything until I won’t be better at drawing or have style (even tho I know they are not important things)

    • Hi Samuel,

Do not hesitate to post anything. Every professional started a beginner.
People will always encourage who are trying. And they will be happy to see you progress and go through obstacles.

There is no need to overthink showing your drawings.
Keep up learning your fundamentals of sketching, and you will naturally progress.

  • Hi Chou -Tac,

I will be applying for a footwear and accessory design course next year, and wanted to develop sketching and illustration skills prior to joining the course, so I can bring my ideas to life.

  • I am a professional video editor from Austin, Texas. However, improving my design sketching skills will help immeasurably when developing new content.

  • I am a novice Industrial Designer from Mumbai, India. I recently finished my bachelors in Product Design but unfortunately I wasn’t taught how to do design sketching at school.
Lack of proper guidance in design sketching has made me face a lot of difficulties in communicating my ideas to my manager as well as my clients, and I had to rely a lot on CAD(which is slow).

While I was watching “How to draw Lines” video by Chou Tac, I was able to reflect back very clearly what I was doing wrong, right from Posture, Hand movement vs Arm Movement.
The interesting analogies through which he taught about lines is very insightful and that’s exactly what made me sign up for this Starter Kit so that I can practice in the right way and communicate my ideas BETTER and FAST!! 🙂

    • Hello Sudhanshu.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with my video tutorial.
I am glad that what you learn has a direct impact on your work.

      Definitely awesome!

      Keep going!

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

    • Hey Jack,

      I know what you mean.
While we can copy very well (which is already a great skill),
we think we can draw. But is actually kind of an illusion when we try to draw from imagination our own ideas.

      We all start by copying,
while you will learn the fundamentals of drawing, perspective…
copying others will still remain essential for your progress.

It will allow you to feed your memory of forms
      and keep your motivation high.

Keep going and you might soon compete with the artist and designers you admire!

  • Hello,
I’m in San Francisco, CA, and I saw 16 Tips on how to draw a shoe and wanted to check out the book.

  • Maine, USA
I want to be able to draw from imagination. I just found you on YouTube because I was researching how to draw spheres, in perspective and I was amazed, at the amount of relevant videos you already have on learning to draw from imagination.

    • I am glad you learn practical things on my videos.
Drawing from imagination is so much fun!

It allows us to escape from reality creating our own world.
And as a Product designer to actually influence the world we physically live in by bringing value for people.

Thank you for your feedback Hollie!

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

    • Hi Graham,

I do believe in “Quick wins”.

Basically about giving simple exercises that beginners will succeed and bringing joy and accomplishment.

The designer starter kit ia about this.

That will help them realise they can do much better than they thought.

And that when things are explain simply, anything is actually achievable by anyone, especially themselves! 🙂

I hope to be able to improve a lot by learning from here, thank you!

  • I am a student of Design… but my drawing skills never developed well… when I was 12yo when started copying from HQ’s… then tried to go to realism without practicing i thought i would be able to draw but not… this made me feel awful and I stopped drawing… till 2018 and got into college to study design I had to draw… felt a bit behind my classmate because they made good draws and when i looked at mine … an error make comparisons( dont do that). Now I have two years and half to graduate and i want to learn how to sketch and draw everything and find my own style and work with illustration!

  • Hi,
I’m from Singapore. I am a teacher ,teaching design and technology. I want to be able to sketch confidently and communicate clearly through drawings.

  • I am a Mechanical Engineer. I do a lot of computer drawing every day, but I would like to express my self by sketching.

  • I’ve always known I have the talent for drawing/sketching plus I love art but I didn’t take further lessons to hone it into a skill. I want to take up Interior Design someday and learning how to sketch can help me become better at perspective drawings.

  • I’m a student in 3D computer graphics for games and film, but want to improve my artistic skills as well in order to be properly able to get my vision across.

  • I have been drawing since I was a kid but never took it seriously enough to learn/study how to draw properly. My drawings still look like a kid’s sketches. I regret wasting so much time as I want to be an artist who has the skill to paint whatever comes to mind.
I also want to explore the field of Concept art; master environments and character design later on.
I was trying to draw something as simple yet highly basic and important as “straight lines” and failed to get them correctly. I looked all over YouTube to find someone who can teach why my lines are bad. And I can say your channel is the only one that truly is helping me with the basics of: lines, circles and ellipses.
And omg! Last night I watched the tutorial on how to draw ellipses and it has finally solved all the issues I had! like magic! my ellipses are not pancakes anymore!
So, I find that designers are really great with such fundamentals so I thought I could use some extra help with this guide. Thank you for all the effort, you are really helpful 🙂

  • Trying to get back into sketching, I teach high school design technology and am looking for hints and tips to improve my sketching and pass on to learners.

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

    • Hello Chou Tac.
I’m a former student of yours
I started the sketch like the pros course but sadly never completed it, I’d speare you the long story and just say I’m back now…I still have a passion for drawing. I tried to see if could access the course link sent to my former account emansjo247@gmail.com but sadly I couldn’t…I really want to draw again, what can I do?

        • I also need to know moreabout technique. I watch video and the Pro Designer is using Ipad for sketch book, I wonder do we do like that with book and pencil? because guess drawing on Tablet and notebook is different. Should I start with tablet or sketchbook and pencil?

          • Hi Uyen,

If you use a screen tablet like a iPad or Wacom Cintiq, it gets very similar to the process on drawing with paper.

There are no perfect time to start drawing on tablet. However, drawing on paper is a must. It gets intuitive, and you can draw anywhere you want. It’s spontaneous. Take a pen, draw.
While on tablet is: take your tablet, your pen, on the tablet, open the app, choose your canvas size… Ok it’s fast, but everyday… a regular pen will make a difference. 😉

    • Me too. I watch video and the Pro Designer is using Ipad for sketch book, I wonder do we do like that with book and pencil?

  • Hi, I’m Michelle from the US and I am unsure what direction to take when it comes to studies. All I know is I have a passion for art and learning so I will continue to create. • To the ones who didn’t get the book, i tried with some diferent mail accounts and i only could get it with a gmail account

      • I was able to download it today using a non-gmail account. I put in a temporary email and it worked today for some reason

  • I am studying Design and Technology teaching at University and I need to learn how to draw – this looks like a good method

  • Hello, from the US. I’ve always loved drawing and doodling as a kid. Drawing allowed me to be expressive about how I’d feel, but a lot of the time it was just I thought looked cool. As years passed I still drew but not as much as I’d wish. Luckily, recent events have led me to rekindle my passion for art. Now I’ve been left with a lot of ideas and concepts that I would love to see on paper, and through studying from books and teachers I can express them much better than I did as a kid.

    • That i s great you go back to your passion.
Your ideas and concepts will definitely take forms with a good study of the basics of sketching :). Welcome Mackey!

  • I’m a mechanical design engineer and want to do more industrial design. I love seeing these beautiful industrial design sketches around and about and want to be able to bring my ideas to life like that.

  • Hi,

My passion has been designing cars for more than 20 years, I am totally an amateur, but still trying to learn and never give up drawing. I sometimes realize, my self already used many ideas on my sketches, such as lines, a feature to the car etc. way before I see them on the cars on roads or on the concepts. • hi, I’m Miguel Bernardes and I’m from Portugal.

I am a product designer, and I feel that my weak point in the presentations was not knowing how to draw products.
I know that this type of sketch will greatly increase my presentations and my confidence in making product sketch.

    • Hi Miguel,

I agree, being able to draw the products you have in mind will drastically make a difference in your presentation.

Don’t worry, sketching is all about a series of simple techniques.

Let me share with you a tutorial about drawing a product using blocks: https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/how-to-draw-plug-easy/

You will be ready to start it after going through the Designer Starter Kit giving you the basics of perspective. 🙂

      Hope it helps!
      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • I am from Australia

Want to go into sketching various styles in “Parramatta Eels sketches” professionally. As a niche business I can incorporate my love of my NRL Rugby League team as a passionate supporter since 8.

Have always loved drawing from old enough … I was always a good drawer through school. It always has come naturally to me, as other creative enjoyments in my life. Ready to take it to the next level!
Thank you for wanting help me grow!

  • Greetings from Arizona, USA! I’ve always loved drawing and have a dream of being a concept artist, but lost my steam some time ago, and want to get back into it, from the ground up! And I know that designers have a strong sense of drawing fundamentals like form, connectivity, structure, etc. Looking forward to the book and seeing how it helps me get my groove back with confidence!

    • Hey Kym,

You are totally right, for a concept artist, the key is a good understanding and practice of fundamentals.

Soon, they will become intuitive, so your brain will fully focus on creativity!! That’s the crazy fun part where your imagination will have no limit.

  • I really love sketching mostly with boxes like a product designer. It really inspires me to sketch when I see an expert doing sketches.

      Thank you!

  • Hi, I’m a professional industrial designer with many successful products in the marketplace. I have been sketching very small, roughly and quickly just to remember my ideas (so it doesn’t look very nice), then develop it directly in 3D modeling softwares. Now I need to add some beautiful sketches in my portfolio.

    • I see what you mean, on top of adding your sketches in your portfolio, it will also help you convey better your ideas to clients before going to 3D step 🙂

I love napkin sketches. They can be more or less elaborate.

  • I AM FROM INDIA AND I AM A DESIGN STUDENT AND I WANT TO IMPROVE MY SKETCHING SKILLS AND LEARN MORE .

    • I also did not receive the “designer Starter Kit after three attempts. Third one, though, I did receive a “shopping guide”of materials to purchase. I also was not able to comment as requested, which is why I decided to reply to somebody else’s comment in order to say anything at all. Glad I didn’t have to spend money and then receive nothing.I find that many things are easier to describe by drawing examples, but I have no money and don’t draw well. The free book, as described could prove helpful, at least.

  • Hi I’m Shaine a 2D animation & visual development student from Canada! I just wanted to say that even though my field is a little different from a graphic designer, everything in your content helps me a lot and applies to me too like the article you wrote “Is it competitive to be a Designer”. I read all of it and all I have to say is that everything you wrote in there is so real and true and I’m sure it applies to everyone not just designers. I also started in doing what everyone was doing since I came from a STEM high school program, with the pressure of going to a university right out of high school, I thought the most reasonable thing to do was pursue Engineering or all those years will be a waste(if i chose art) So i did. I got admitted so I said to myself “so this is my future…”,not gonna lie, I felt proud that I got admitted but I wasn’t exactly happy knowing that this was gonna be my future. I did a whole term and i hated it. I didn’t even try since I had no motivation to excel. Luckily that time, destiny gave me an “out”. I left the country with my family to go back to my home country, Philippines, for some personal reason in November when final exams were near. I left for about two weeks and came back only to take the exam, I failed to comply most homework and barely did good in the exams. I decided to not enroll in the second term. This was unfortunate at the time but without it I would still probably be continuing that path and would regret that I didn’t quit earlier. For the people that’s in a similar situation let me just say, It is really hard to quit and always seem bad to us since it is linked to the word failure. But it takes courage to take charge of your own life. Don’t take the easy way. Take the path you really want even if things get in the way. Don’t let yourself make excuses because that’s the fear talking. Like Chou said, don’t let fear control you. Let me tell you, It’s gonna be worth it.

    • Hey Hassan,

      Thanks for the recommendation!

Anytime your students may have a question, they can ask on the blog or send me an email is fine 🙂

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

It actually reminds me of when I play darts last time.
I could watch hundreds of hours of professionals playing darts. I would gather precious information.

  • Hello!
I’m Max from India, I pursue Designing and especially Design Thinking to channel my intuitions and Innovate.

  • hei, Olivier here from a Belgian village near the Dutch border. I partly trained as an architect and I’m now designing and drafting wood-steel constructions (the more technical part). I’m looking for a way to upgrade my sketching techniques (for professional purposes): showing random construction details in 3d and building designs. I would also like to familiarize myself with digital sketching (graphic pen and tablet) which are very new to me (I still do my sketching on paper …) and scan them 🙁 cheers

    • Hello Olivier,

Yes I agree that sketching will be greatly helpful to create your own construction details. It is the best way to convey your idea, especially when you work in group.

By the way, there is no problem at all to draw on paper and scan them. A tablet is just a tool. And with practice, you will soon know how to use it as well as an extension of your imagination.

  • Hello! I am an architecture student. I am trying to improve my sketching so that i can communicate my design ideas well.

    • Hi! My name’s Anthony. I’m from Indianapolis, IN, USA. I’ve always loved putting pencil to paper. It helped me block out the bullies in highschool. It’s helped me feel closer to my mom, too. Some of my first memories are her with some charcoal Vines and pitch black hands. Drawing has also helped with my anxiety. I’ve always used graphite pencil but for the last few months I’ve started using an ink pen and my goodness, it’s a whole different ballgame.

      • Hello Anthony,

I just come from the gym and while I was running, I thought about how I was also bullied at school because of my name and Chinese origins and how drawing helped me to create my own crew of friends and gain in confidence in myself.

Thank you for sharing your story. Drawing is definitely something that is fully part of our life. Have fun with the ink pen of course without using any rubber : P

        See you!
        Cheers,
        Chou-Tac

  • Hi! I’m Zubayr, from the US, & I’m excited about sketching because it’s a very useful skill. I am more interested in sketching objects & products than I am sketching animal forms; for some strange reason, I’d never even considered the thought that just as people sketch characters for shows, there are also those who work on the designs of electronics, clothing, etc. I’m finally finding ways to learn things I’ve often dreamed about.

My two years in senior high was spend in making 3d models using the application SketchUp for my projects. it helps me a lot specially in my innovation project. But I need and wanted to ‘re- learn’ how to sketch with the ideas in my mind fix. I mean, i always tend to think different kinds or ways to draw the design and models in my mind but I also tend to forgot it for less than five minutes and make another idea or design that is way to different from the previous. Yeah, patience and longer retentive memory for me is needed since i want to e an architect.

Im Croatian and living in the Netherlands. Im passionate about drawing and i really enjoiyed doing it as a child, but when i grew up i never really focussed on it. These days i find myself thinking about something and imagining how it looks and finially i try to place it on paper. Unfortunately i have a long way to go in learning how to draw. I study biology and often i find structures and organisms that i’d like to image on paper. Thats the motivation and passion that led me to this site and i hope i’ll recieve your ebook Chou-tac Chun.

  • Hi, I’m Silver from Poland. I used to draw since I was a little kid – and was even semi-decent at it in my late teens and early twenties – but I went into depression, lost faith in myself and stopped drawing. Now that I’m approaching thirties, I would like to re-learn how to draw, and I’m searching for sources of motivation – unfortunately, I’m still struggling with depression, so being motivated doesn’t come easy for me.

This site and the e-book look great – I appreciate them a lot. 🙂

  • Hi,

I am very much afraid of drawing. I like sketching but i get bored after one drawing only. I want to fall in love with it, where i don’t stop sketching everything which comes in front of me. What shall i do. how to get rid of this feeling. People say practice will improve your sketching but I even get bore of sketching practice. What shall i do to excite myself with sketching.

    Thank you,
    Regards,
    Hima

  • Hello, my name is Jay. I’m a third year architecture student and I wish to improve my sketching as I feel that I’m very bad at it. I’ve often seen that if a person is good at sketching, he/she is able to generate ideas more quickly and develop then fast too. That is the part where I get stuck. For example, if I’ve been given a design brief, I have a few initial ideas but I’m unable to share it with my professors ( either they misunderstand it or not get it completely and think its absurd). And the whole process is a haywire.
It is time I need something like this, because I don’t want to remain ‘an ordinary designer’.
I’m glad I came across this.

    • Hello Jay,

To get started at generating ideas faster, you will need work on 2 things in parrallel.
First will be your basics of sketching such as perspective.
Second is your ability to draw many thumbnails, quick ideas with doodles. It’s some pictures that show the essence of your ideas without going into the details.

Even though at start it may be clumsy, you gotta keep going and continue to show your sketches.
So you can improve, and find tune into your visual communication.
It’s ok if they misunderstand you now. You are still studying. It’s the perfect time to show your mistakes.

Tomorrow you will do great. 😉

  • Awesom this is very helpfull for my and my students. I recomend them the page to support clases.
    Thank you!

  • Hi, i am from India. i am working as 3d designer and i want to learn sketching for improve my skill.

  • Hi Chou-Tac. I’m Mark from Philippines. Ever since I was a child, I fell in love with arts. Like you, I used to draw different heroes and cartoon characters in my notes. I try to join different art contest when I was a child but sadly, I never won. Because of it, I lost a little bit my interest in art. I still draw but my passion is not that strong just like before. When I reach college, I took a different course. its not related to arts. This is my last year in college. And I’m about to graduate. But suddenly, my passion for arts came back again. Now, I’m joining different contest online and luckily, sometimes I win. Because of it, I can buy art materials. It is my only way in pursuing my passion in arts. I’m not that financially stable. I cant afford that’s why I never attend an art class. I’m self-taught. I love looking to different artworks and I try to figure out how it was made. It is very important for me to learn sketching because it will help me improve my craft. Many people are amazed in my skills but I’m not that confident in myself. I always think that I have only a common skills, not special a one. I want to find my own style. I really love arts. I’m enjoying while making artworks. It fades away all of my problem and worries. And it also bring me to different worlds. A simple artwork can tell various stories. And above all, art is a very great tool to promote change. I want to use technology and art to promote change that our world needs. Of all the challenges our world is facing now, arts can be a powerful tool to influence the mind of the people. I have a lot ideas in my mind. I want to convey it by using art. Because art is unlimited. If I will be given an opportunity, I would really love to enter an art school. I want to learn all that I need to learn. Learning is very fun. Thank you so much for all the tutorials that you made. It inspires us all. God Bless you.

    • Hello Mark,

Yes Art is meaningful, and there is an infinity of ways to use it to help people. I personally think that design is the best medium to do so. Why? Because it gives you the tool to create for making a better world. 🙂

    • Passion is the fuel we gotta take care of. As it will help us go through any obstacles 🙂 The best way is to keep looking for solution and making progress. Tiny, or big, I believe Progress is what makes us happy and proud of our accomplishment.

  • Hey,I am Megha from INDIA. I am a student and i am very much passionate for designing. Hope your starter kit will help me out. Thank you

  • Thanks Chou this is so good. I’ve been getting back to sketching after a long break. I do it purely for relaxation but I’m keen to improve. The use of the ballpoint pen is helpful as I spend too much time erasing!

    • Hello Nnen,

Yeah I agree! Without erasing, and starting any of your sketch with a light pen pressure will be even more relaxing as you will keep your drawing flow going. 🙂

  • Hi my name’s Jenie and I’m from the Philippines. I have always been fond of drawing but my art does not seem to improve or I just don’t know the techniques that would help me better my art.

  • Hi. I’m mustafa from Istanbul, Turkey. I’m drawing artistic sketches for more than 30 years. I have seen your Facebook page, and i found it very helpful. I want to try your guide for product design sketching. Thank you.

  • Hello Chou Tac,
Fifth try: I can’t succeed downloading your book.
Each time it links me to your website
    https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/thankyou/
and the message is the same:

    “Welcome on board!
You will get your 1st guide in few minutes in your email.

    Please, introduce yourself below.
    Telling us your name,
The country you come from and
    Why learning how to sketch

  • Hello Chou-Tac, greet from Taiwan!
I’m currently being student of Industrial design, and really want to improve the skill of precise and fluent hand drawing. Because even filled with convenient edgy tools we have nowadays, I found that really, the fundamental of design, conveying concept and clearing your own thought is from the physical interaction with your pen and paper.
Thank you so much for the lectures!

  • Hello Chou-Tac! thank you so much for your effort. I’ve just finiched reading the first guide and I loved it. I must say some tips really shocked me, I had no idea the posture of the body can affect the drawing.
Basically, drawing is the only thing I’m passionate about in my life. but whenever I notice how lacking my drawing is compared to others I get discouraged. If I can’t get any better I’m afraid one day I will give up on drawing once and for all. Once again thank you.

  • Hello everyone.
I’ve been trying to learn how to draw for a few years by now, but I always tend to lose the hold on the subject once I face any kind of considerable challange.

This time, I’ve decided I don’t have much time to waste anymore and I am trying to learn from different sources of information and exercises at the same time. I hope it works out for me :).

    Wishing good luck to y’all.

    • Hello Carlos,

Congrats for starting the new year with determination !
A great way to keep going despite of the big challenges, is to revisualise yourself all the things you can draw when you will get the skills.
I personnally do enjoy buying artbooks from different artist I like. It feeds me in term of content buy also emotionaly. That emotion is what you wanna take care of. That’s the key :). Your inspiration may be from artists, designers, real products, movies, cartoon, fashion show …)

I invite you to have a look at this article about artbooks 🙂 https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/art-books-are-my-red-bull-my-energy-boost-generator/

  • Hello there!
I am Laís, from Brazil, and I’m searching to study and improve my sketching skills for design and my drawings. For now I’m focused at learning about perspectives and apply at my concept arts!

  • Hello i’m Ugo,Just got to know about this site XD I’m quite adept at digital illustration, character design and graphic design but studied mechanical engineering for a bachelors degree. My brain is kinda split into two right now and i feel industrial design might fix it, so i want to channel my creativity and drawing skills in that direction. I’m still not sure if industrial design is right for me or i should just go for animation

    • I would say try to meet people, students but also who are in the industry.
You may go to private school you may target in animation or product design and meet teachers who are also professionals. They can share with you a lot I am sure ! 🙂

At the end, follow your heart. That’s the ultimate one you can trust to make you go through the obstacles you will meet. Why ? Because your passion will transform any problems into challenges ! 🙂

  • Hi! Im Anadhya, form India. Im a product design student and i would like to improve my sketching skills. im not very good at it.

  • Hi! Esra from Turkey. I think I am good in 3D perception and I can draw different forms in my mind easily. :)But I have some problems in visualizing my ideas. I cannot understand the reason behind not being able to sketch a form as easily as I can imagine in my mind. If I am trying to visualize what I have in my mind, it can take long time, and I can miss other ideas until finishing the first sketch. I would be glad, if there was a tool that wouldn’t necessiate hands to draw an idea, by e.g. being controlled merely by brain. 🙂 What do I specifically need for improving my skill?

    • Hello Esra,

A cool way to start better seeing volumes in your mind, is to start by drawing cubes in any angle. That will be the basics of drawing any object later on. Soon you will be able to imagine a cube in your mind and turn it from imagination. 🙂

Go ahead with the Designer Starter Kit ! That’s what you are going to study in the guides.

      Have fun !
      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

      • Thanks Chou-Tac. I am a member of your “Sketch like the pros” course. Unfortunatelly couldn’t be a VIP member. If it could get be possible later, I would be glad to be informed. I watched first week videos, and even these were beneficial.

        Thanks & Greetings
        Esra

  • Hi I’m Jake and I want to be a great artist more than anything. I’d like to be able to create great art that people like me are inspired by. I want to illustrate my ideas in as beautiful a form as possible. I love art. I practice 40+ hours a week but I know there’s more to learn than I can get from my own studies so I’ve been looking into what fundamentals and techniques I might need to fine tune. It’s very frustrating but I won’t give up!

  • Hey Chou. I’m a designer from India. And sketching plays an important role in visualizing a design before it is made. A beautiful and precise sketch makes easier to understand the concept of the design. So, we need to do sketch and doodles to make the projects more appreciable.

    Have a good day….

I am Aniruddha from India. I am a product design student. Sketching is the basic and the most important tool for all designers. So now I want to make it a practice so that by the time I hit the industry I got it in the back of my hand 😉

  • Hi my name is Mauricio, but i prefer Max, I from Chicago and I attend Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design. My first art class was when i started high school. I took a drawing class and ever since then I’ve been obsessed with minuet details of lines. It’s hard to pinpoint or even explain where my passion for drawing and design comes from but I think like any other language, sketching is important because it is another way to express and experience the world within and surrounding us. Too me sketching is the most powerful way to visually express ones self.

    • Hello Max,

I totally agree, sketching is so cool when you can drop what you have in mind on paper! That’s a great feel! I don’t say it’s easy but but so worth working at getting better everyday.

  • Hey Chou-Tac, this is Ming here from Taiwan. I’m a sales at present who’s always passionate with design and photography art and would like to make my turn to step in the creative fields. I’ve been planning to further my study at art school but feel struggling sometimes for finding myself a right start to develop my portfolios. Then I found your blog, which excites me a lot and inspires me to enjoy drawing and find myself a good start here. I’m looking forward to learning more knowledge here in this blog from you! Thank you for sharing these tips with us beginners.

  • hi, im from the philippines. ever since i was young, i have used drawing as a way to vent out and express my emotions whether it may be negative or positive emotions. at the beginning, it was just a hobby and it didn’t matter that much to me if my drawings are bad as long as the message was present at the drawing but now, i want to improve so that i won’t be shy on showing others my drawings so that they could also feel the emotion from just seeing the drawing. that is why learning to sketch is very important to me.

  • Hi, I’m from Taiwan, feel interested in drawing, and I prepare to pursue my master degree in interaction design in the near future. Drawing is also a crucial matter in that field to express my ideas. Then, I see your video, and I think it is helpful.
Really expect to see your books.
    Thank you very much!

  • Hi, my name is Philipp, i come from Italy and study urban planning in Vienna. I always liked to draw and i think hand drawing is a really cool technique also to make visuals, but also just a nice hobby. I hope to improve with your guides and i think its a really nice idea with your website.
    ciao Philipp

  • Hey Man

  • I hoppe this sketches will halp me to learn more about designs. cos i am styding art and design and also photoshop. ilustrator. 3d max. corl draw.thank you.

    • Hello Lucy,

Great, then you will love combine all of them together. Sketching is what any designer should do before going to computer. So they can generate more ideas first in no time. 🙂

      See you!
      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

    keep on keeping on.

  • Hello Tac, my Name is Noah Ibrahim, i am an aspiring shoe designer, i practically dont know how to draw anything, even tho i have a design perspective in me, which cobblers around me fail to see when i pitch designs to them. Please i want you to take a deep a interest in me, i know that i really need your help to getter better. thank you.

    • Keep going Noah, one time in a while, let me know how things going :).

TIP: Whenever you have difficulty to express your ideas, find alternative ways. You could take pictures of the shoes or last, then draw on top of them. It’s very easy with your Ipad for example.

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • Thanks for this, I am really keen! My name is Iris, originally from The Netherlands, but now living in Gambella, Ethiopia, to work on natural resource management.

    Looking forward to the manuals!

  • Hello Chou-Tac,
I wanted to thank you for the starter kit on sketching, just those simple exercises really helped with getting back into drawing. I left art school 2years ago, remarried and working full-time, I lost most of my skills, but these tips really do propel my enthusiasm once again for the love of drawing and why I went to art school. If you have anyone more videos and tips, please keep informed, thanks again.

  • Hey!I’m Cristina, from Spain, and I study Computer Engeneering. My mother and I both found your guides very helpful and we would be very interested if you made more in the future. We also liked your videos very much, but some are very complicathed while others are more basic. We would appreciate it if you made more setp-by-step guides to get to the higher levels of Design.

    • Hello Cristina,

That’s cool that you learn in family.
Well noted about more guides ! I was actually thinking about it today. But for now I am more focused on giving the online design sketching courses to my class.

In case its something that interest you, let me know and I could tell you more about it. (Even though the registration of the next session is not opened yet)

      Have a nice day !
      Cheers,

  • Hi Chou-Tac,

I am 19 years old and am studying to become an architect. I want to learn to draw mainly to communicate my ideas, sketch quickly what I see, and my design ideas. I will give your book a try!

    Thank you,
    Karina

  • Hi mentor!

I am a 24 years old mechanical engineer who has not been taught how to free-hand draw during her degree. I am really glad that I found your page and tutorials since with your help I will learn how to graphically comunicate and will be able to share my ideas with the other members of my team. I am very thankfull that you share your knowledge with us and that you will help me express this.

    All the best Chou-Tac,
    B

  • Hello Chou-Tac!
I’m Nicolás, a 20 year-old Industrial Design student from Argentina. I love to sketch everyday, and i know how important it is in order to communicate your ideas. I found your guide quite interesting and easy to understand! I feel I’m getting better at this everyday. Now I can share my drawings with more confidence. Thank you very much for sharing your tips! 😀

Oh, I almost forgot! Do you have a Spanish version of the guide?

  • Hello Chou-Tac,

I’m a spanish engineer (with a masters degree in mechanical engineering), and although I am accomplished in CAD and all things related to manufacturing and stress testing I always lacked the ability to turn my prototype ideas into sketches that would inspire and transmit what was in my head.

I poured every ounce of energy into my technical abilities so…art was never nurtured nor cared for…But I believe that with your guidance and my stubborness I can some day create decent prototype sketches, or at least sketches that inspire something more than laughter to those looking at them =/

Thanks a lot for sharing all this.

    • Hello Alvaro,

Laughter are not an issue. To avoid people laugh at any of your sketches whatever level it is, convince them through your idea and story. People who worth hear your ideas will listen to you, other people who won’t are not worth the effort. Carry on learning and improving, you will do great. 🙂

  • Hey, I’m from Colombia,
Currently I’m on the University, majoring on Industrial Design. On my Every day life, i need to sketch a lot of projects, so i hope this could help me to improve my sketches.
and Btw, Thank you a lot!

    Have a nice week

  • Hiya, my name is Ruth and I’m from London.
I currently work in retail in customer services but would love to work in the art industry as an illustrator. I’m starting quite late in life (in my thirties), so I’m trying to learn all the basic fundamentals (or at the very least get a good grasp of them) as quickly as possible. I know I have a lot of catching up to do and a long way to go, but the journey should be fun. 🙂

    • Hello Ruth,

As an Illustrator remember that technique is one thing, but most important people will enjoy your own personality, your style. What story do you to tell to them ? This is what will make you unique and memorable. An illustrator I like a lot is http://www.celiacalle.com/ she has done illustration for Fashion magazine and also Marvel comics cover keeping her own style !

There is multiple path to become an Illustrator, but that path is to me the one which is the most fun. See what you like :).

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • Hi! I’m Hamidreza from Iran and I’m an architect.
I”m very excited for having this great courses.
    Thanks a lot!

  • Hi! My name is Alexandra and i’m from Romania. I’m 18 and still uncertain about my future. For many years I was impressed by the skills manga makers have and i’m also interested in design. I tried to develop my skills years ago but gave up as there was no one to teach me. I’m happy that I found this now. Let’s get started!^^

    • Yeah, enjoy Alexandra ! : D

I also starter with animation and Manga when I was teenagers. I think I gave up also many times, but we are passionate so we also come back to drawing !

  • Hi!! My name is Lerisha and I am from Maryland but I just moved to the West Coast in Arizona. I am currently studying Animation and Game Art Design!! =D I am looking to sharpen my drawing skills and master learning how to animate and create Game Art designs.

  • Hey hey, I am Katarina, industrial designer from Slovenia. Currently I am finishing my master degree and I decided to refresh my sketching skills. So let’s start! 🙂

  • Hey there I’m Gregory or Greg Hutnik. I am 17 and at DASH (Design and Architecture Senior High) pursuing my dream of being an industrial designer. I have been at this school for 3 years now and I am hoping I can learn a few new techniques from this. Hoping to get a physical copy of the book. Design district (Miami Florida) is a good place for this you get to see new things passing you buy and you get inspired so I sketch what I think; most of the time. It’s great I found this and excited to get something out of it

  • I’m from Sydney and I have never been very confident in sketching and drawing and would like to change that.
I look forward to starting your course.

  • Hello, Chou-Tac! My name is Agustina. I’m 21 yo and I’m from Argentina. I’m studying software engineering. I’m not a design student but I really want to learn to draw. I really do enjoy it but I’m stuck on my very basic and limited comfort zone and I want to get out of it. I’m a very metodic person and very self-critic so I find it really hard to just sketch whatever it’s in front on me. I’m always thinking: “but where do I begin?” “It’s okay like this?” “It doesn’t seem right”, and even if I do take time to practise I don’t really see improvements. BUT I’m really positive about your guide and I want to say THANK YOU 🙂 really. It seems like a good start for begginers like me. Sorry if my English isn’t right and thank you again!! 😀

  • Hey there! I’m Jagruit from India. I currently stepped into the world of Independent video game development and found that it is very beneficial to plan out and conceptualize things before the development process begins. I have been good at sketching on paper, but that is the case only when I replicate stuff by seeing. I get a good perception just by that.

However, I fail when trying to draw something from my imagination. I just don’t produce the precise results, and I am not good with straight lines and curves in freehand. Furthermore, this amplifies when I try to draw stuff on Autodesk Sketchbook using my graphics tablet. I need to master this because I want to step into the digital realm of artworks and it’ll be beneficial if I create digital concepts for the video games.

I came across a tip relating to Autodesk sketchbook about setting up a high resolution file in Sketchbook from the start, and as I navigated around this site, I liked the tips and articles that you shared. So I decided to get your book to learn more and improve my skills and signed up 🙂

Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge with everyone 😀

  • Hi, I’m Hendra from National University of Singapore, taking Mechanical Engineer as my major. I am currently in my 3rd year doing a design project. I find that to be able to sketch a new idea on paper helps greatly in later stage of developing it using software such as CAD/Solidwork. I’ve just received my 1st guide. It’s very insightful and am looking forward the other guides. Thank you so much for sharing:)

    • Hello Hendra,

Glas to have readers from Singapore, where I am now 🙂

Sketching skills for people who use 3d software is a big discussion. hehe. I an glad you want to improve your sketching skills to better communicate.

Enjoy the guides. Let me know how it goes !

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • Thank you for great and inspiring work – and tutorials. As a industrial designer whom became a packaging designer, I do need to refrech my sketching skills! Thank you for great work! Ill do my 15 min every day 🙂

  • Hello Chou-Tac,

I was born and raised in Montreal, Canada. I work for an aviation company as a production planner. I developed a passion for line art when I purchased my first comic book at the age of six. I drew passionately every day but I was extremely self-critical (my drawings never looked exactly like the characters in my comic books) and by the age of 13 I gave it up, deciding that art was for people with innate talent – an assumption believed by many even to this day. Decades later I find that my love for drawing is as strong as ever and though I don’t presume to make a career out of it I’ve decided that I will learn this elusive craft.
Thanks to the internet and especially people like yourself who unselfishly share their knowledge I feel for the first time that it is possible to learn how to draw. What I very much like about your videos is the spontaneity and the quality of your lines, not to mention the speed in which you draw. Your video on sharpening your sense of proportion and how to draw a cup – one of your earlier videos – I found very helpful. I understand that the focus is more on industrial design but I really enjoy your character sketches and sketching on location.
There, you now know a little about myself. I look forward in receiving the lessons and if I can get passed my inhibitions I may send you some of my drawings. 🙂

thank you, and as we say here,
    salut. A la prochaine,
    Nick

    • Salut Nick !

I am glad to know a bit of your story. And i can see we have some interest in common about sketching :).

I am glad that you found the content of the blog helpful 🙂

      A bientot,

      Cheers,
      Chou-Tac

  • hello my name is nikhil ..i am a design student. doing it from small college..my question is do i need valuable college to be good designer . what can i do for becoming a good designer. need help

    • Hello Nikhil,

I remember, when I was at school, we said among students that no matter the school, a passionate student will always find a way. I believe that even though you come from a small college they will give you essential keys of creativity, and project. From there you will need to provide 90% of the work.
I do recommend you to surround yourself with motivated students with whom you will progress and cheer up together – and even debate about design. You will create even more opportunities to improve.

How to be a good designer is a very wide question as a designer gather quite a good number of skills. He doesn’t have to be perfect for all. The most important thing is to me about being curious, keeping that hunger of curiosity. Anybody who is curious, ask question – and sometime find answers that nobody though about. That’s how you will find innovative solution that will improve people daily life.

A designer will face a lot of people who do not believe in him or his project for x-reason. Proposing innovative ideas is not intuitive. So a good designer also need to work on how to convince other people, department (marketing, engineering…), clients to follow and support him. You will need courage to challenge yourself, stick to your position or convince people with humility.

Design sketching will definitely help you to be more creative and communicate with more confidence !

      Hope it helps.
      Cheers.
      Chou-Tac

PS: I invite you to listen to this Podcast from Nick Huber and myself about Why sketching is so important for a Designer. https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/why-sketching-is-so-important-for-a-designer-with-nick-huber-mesh01-com/

  • Hi Chou-Tac!
Just wanted to say thank you for everything you share with us. Be it the techniques you explain, the challenges you take, as well as the technical advice on all types of gear; but mainly, your passion. That encouraging, upbeat message you convey. I totally appreciate that. One of my professors (I study ID) strongly recommended the class visiting your blog, and I now see why…
    Cheers from Argentina!

I’m hoping this course would help me as I have struggled my first two years of study.

    • Glad to have you on board Kauser ! 😀

For you, ad an architect student, the module 1 about straight line is pretty essential as I will ask you to draw your perspective lines WITHOUT ruler and WITHOUT eraser 😉 Hehe

  • Hi Chou-Tac,

My name is Shana and I’m 26. I study industrial design in Germany but right now I’m on an exchange semester in Australia. Hopefully I will get an internship in usa that I would probably start in April.

So something that really frustrates me and lets me feel I’m not a “good-enough-designer” is that I can’t sketch. And I know that if i wanna have a really good career this is a tool I have to be able to use. So many times I decided to start learning sketching but i never really commited to it. And as my big next step is coming closer, so the internship, I’ve decided to learn sketching and this time for real. I hope I can do it this time! What you do and how you communicate the tutorials via e-mail… this seems pretty cool…Thank you so much!!

ps.: I think I accidentally registered twice for the stater kit … I’m already on the list for the sketchbook course.

    Cheers

    • Awesome Shana. Good news !
You already got something important: your compelling goal ! That’s what you need to keep in mind every morning you wake up :D. So you will take action accordingly and stick to your projects happily. 😀

  • Hey, im Michael from Germany :-)….want to study industrial design and i am creating a portfolio map for the acceptance process at the Burg-university. Maybe you guys can give me some tips for this :-). Anyway great page and i am sure to learn a lot. Best regards Michi 🙂

  • Hola, me parece genial la iniciativa. Siempre he tenido esa pasión por el dibujo pero no encontraba una inicativa como esta. Podrías enviarme la versión española por favor.

    Muy agradecido

    Luis Felipe

  • Hey Chou Tac !

I am very happy to have found your website via “design sketching” on facebook.

I started with graffiti; style writing in the first place. Through the years I changed my focus on canvases. I already did not decide what I want to focus on in my art, so you can say I try one hell of stuff since years because I really can not decide what I want to concentrate on as style or sujet. Maybe I left out the basics.

Props to you and your way of offering main things in sketching. Keep up the good work !

    -Fry

    • Hello Fry,

I remember one of my friend who was also making graffiti was making great lines in Design sketching. He imported his Graffiti style into design. It was awesome. Everything are linked each other. So seams to be curious and that’s a great thing !

To help you decide, it’s not a matter of art, techniques or skills. Design is about making people life better, making better products, better experience. Your today skills doesn’t matter much. Focus on your goal, then find ways to get what you need.

      Hope it helps.

  • Hi my name is Diego, I’m from colombia but I’m living in Argentina, i saw your instagram page and inmediatly i came here, I want to study Industrial Design and i think that the best way to show and communicate my ideas is sketching, when you learn to draw, you learn to see (A sentence from spencer nugent, another sketch blogger) thanks (:

    • Hello Diego,

I fully agree with Spencer. Our brain is not made to retain all the information. Putting down ideas on paper allow us to go deeper in our research and get so much more creative ! Best of it is that we can share our sketches to people. This is how we connect multiple brains on a project and make it even more awesome !
Sketching is definitely the best language on earth. 🙂

Hey tonight we (me and Sketchdrive) have just released a sample module of my upcoming Design sketching course. You can get there the 3 lessons of 6 videos. https://my.sketchdrive.com/sample-projects/share/d09655NirRqJBC89AlhfAQ

      Hope you enjoy !

    Chou-Tac
i am nikhil..i am preapring for fashion designing but my sketching&coloring is very dull..plzz help me and give tricks..

    • Hello Nikhil,
You need some tips for your fashion sketching?
For your sketching, try to give dynamic poses to your model, and give your model a 9 head height. As soon as you got a nice pose, don t hesitate to use underlay to draw multiple proposal of clothing. For the colours, if you are clumsy, you can try with pastel colors first. They are light so you dont take much risk. A good tool is watercolour, it s smooth, and even if you do some mistakes, it looks good. Hehe. You dont have to be perfect. Remember to mix your colour with A LOT of water. Then when your watercolour is dry, feel free to add a pop up colour that will give more contrast to your sketches and attract people eyes. Remember to leave a lot of blank.
      Hope it helps 🙂

  • The two links in the email for “Guide 1” don’t reference any files and look like click-bait. Is there any other way to get the files?

  • Hello Chou-Tac !
My name’s Bastien, I’m 18 years old in approximately two hours and I’m a French student in the preparatory class in a Art/Drawing school. My dream is to become a Game Artist (video games is my main passion). And actually sketching is really complicated to me. I like really much adding details and I can’t even prevent me from making some haha. So I hope my level will improve (I need to learn as much as I can in one year if I wanna enter in my dream Game Art School :p)

    • Happy Birthday Bastien =)
Try to do not go into details too early. Draw starting from general shapes to details. If you take this habit from now, you will improve so much faster. No point to spend hours on details if your main shape is not ready yet or not correct. In this case you might struggle to make it look good and end disappointed.
If you start with a good main shape, and perspective setup, it will become more fun and easy for you to add the details.

Tip: you can train your details even on a simple cylinder or sphere. Do many experimentation instead of trying to make only “piece of art”

A bientot ! (je suis francais auss au fait)

  • Chou-Tac,

My name is Frank. I am a graduate from DigiPen Institute of Technology. We focused on a lot of traditional drawing, not only learning how to make a mark but also the right ways to do it. We also covered a lot of the digital realms. As I have no real issues with sketching and drawing, I am interested in in the design aspects of your guide. We learned how to design but for games and moves in a sense that we were all over the place and not specific.

Sometimes I have difficulties with the basics. This is where your guide seems to be where I would want. Will comment later on how the guide has helped me.

    Thanks,

    Frank

    • Hello Frank,

I believe this guide will be too basic for you though. But you may find out some tricks that will help you on your sketching routine. 🙂

  • Hello, Chou-Tac. My name is Brian. I am a veteran EE making the transition from electrical engineering to design under the guidance of a great mentor, an accomplished professional designer. I have done a few relatively simple projects in the last ten years, and have some 3D CAD modeling experience. Now I am going full-time. My greatest need at this time is improvement in sketching skills.

  • Hi Chou-Tac. My name’s Cake, I’m a high-school student from Thailand. I really glad to find you . I’m learning product design but my sketching skill is not good enough .The things that i think in my mind but when i draw it in the paper it’s not beautiful as i think it should be. So, i want to improve my skill and want to know how to use Copic .I really need your advice .
    Thank you 🙂

    • Welcome to the blog Chutikarn. 🙂 Take your time at decomposing the product you see in many simple shapes. That will help you visualise and draw them better.

  • Hi Chou-Tac. My name is Wouter, I’m 23 and I’m recently graduated as a Master in Computer Science. My main interest in Computer Science lies within Computer Graphics, the mathematical backend for 3D programs like Blender, Maya, 3DS Max. But, whole my life I’m also passionate about Computer Graphics Art, which makes me always come back and try these programs (Blender, Maya, …) to become better at CG art. These learning paths always end after 1-2 weeks when it becomes clear that one better first learns to draw, something I always give up after a couple of days. I find it really hard for myself to keep my motivation going, I hope this book gives me a good start to keep the momentum going.

  • Hey ChouTac, what up? My name is Lavi, I’m a highschool student from Israel. I’m dreaming on learning and working as comic book artist, graphic designer, concept artist or anything else related to art. As for now, I’m learning at the art class at my school, trying to learn new things and develop my style. I’d say I’m feeling somewhat fine with drawing anatomy & organic things, but I’m still struggling with mech, bots, buildings etc… I have a good feeling that your blog&tutorials will be a great help for me

I would really appreciate I you’d have a snap look on my work at my Instagram page “Lavi.Art”
    Thanks again and you’re amazing!

      • Hello there! Thank you for making this,I appreciate the help I can get from this! 🙂

I am currently an 18-year old Advertising Arts student about to enter my 3rd year in college and am residing in this island in the Philippines called Cebu.

I was looking for something to learn and improve over this summer break so I found your site after deciding to work on my illustration skills having just barely made through a class where the instructor failed to teach us properly, ahah.

I look forward to challenging myself with skills that can help with my incoming classes and personal portfolio project! ╰(*´︶`*)╯ thank you!

  • Hello ChouTac. My name is ashutosh from India. I am a product design student. Even if people appreciate my sketching I feel that my sketching is bad and I love to improve it always. Thank you for the tutorials your uploading and the guide book. Looking forward to learn more from you.

I had a question to ask. Should I go on for electronic sketching pad? if yes, which one will you recommend?

    • Hello Ashutosh,

I don’t recommend Ipad for drawing (Even though some people do great stuff on it). The palm recognition is not that good so I keep having a conflict between the pen and my palm. :S I prefer to use the Samsung Pro note for an on-the-go usage. This type of tablet is just a bonus. You can’t install Illustrator and photoshop on them, 2 softwares that are needed as a Product designer. So you may consider a Wacom tablet instead. Feel free to see more about the materials here: https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/category/industrial-design-sketching-tools/ See yah.

  • Hi~ Chou-Tac, My name is Jasmine Shiao, I’m from Taiwan and I’m currently studying in product design. I want to improve my sketch ability but always don’t know how to start. It’s always confuse me whether setting a topic for the sketch is needed or not.

  • Hi Chou-Tac, My name is Daniel, i’m from Spain and i’m studying Producto Development Engineering. I need to practise my products sketching technichs. I have a Wacom Intuous S and i want to learn to use it properly, and i’m attempting to do all the drawings with it. Do you think is a good idea? or should i always start drawing by hand? I don’t want to be buying markers and crayons all the time so i don’t know how to improve. P.D. I have just discover your website and it’s awesome, i’ll be following it since now.

    • Hello Daniel,

About the markers, if your school aims to teach you how to use them, I would make a try. At least get the series of shade of grey (I got a preference with the cool grey, more than the warm – that’s my own opinion) For the colours, you may choose one or two for a start (Maybe choose your favourite colour it will be like your signature colour :P) just for using them as a “popping colour”. It’s a good way to highlight certain part of your product/sketch in a second. Then if you see that you like it, you may buy more markers along the way.

About drawing on paper vs tablet:
At start you can combine both, they are complementary – But give a preference to paper. There is nothing better than drawing on paper to learn. All the good habits in sketching are taken in an analog way. Your movement will be more free as you can’t express certain line on your Intuos because of its format.
You can start digital early it’s fine. Make sure to do not be trapped into Photoshop and all the tricks to cover your sketching mistakes.

Sketching is first of all made to create ideas QUICK (Ideation phase). Then only sketching is made for communicating with seductive boards with beautiful rendering (Communication phase). If you just start Product design, you should give priority to the first phase drawing mostly on paper.

So spend time with a pen and paper with NO ERASER. Pen and paper are your best friends. If one day you got a client facing you in a coffee table chatting about a project, be ready to quick sketch ideas in front of him. Would be difficult to tell him to wait for you to plug your tablet and do some photoshop rendering on the spot… 😉

Plus you can bring a pen and a sketchbook anywhere you are and practice anytime. Museum, urban sketch, bus, waiting room… are great opportunities for you to improve your skills.

For the choice of pen, you just need a simple ball point pen at start – that you may use with a Papermate for line weight. That’s all 🙂
      Hope it helps !

PS: I got a Spanish version of the book. Let me know if you are interested.

      • wow, thank you so much for the answer, you opened my eyes with the “wait, i have to plug in my tablet…” that’s so true. I’m getting a pen and a paper right now. Don’t worry about the spanish guide, i’ll practise my english 🙂

  • Hi Chou-Tac, My name is Siddhartha Nayak, I live in Bangalore, India, I am an mechanical engineer and interested in Product design and industrial design. Hope your guideline helps me to become product designer.

  • Hi there! My name is Monique Barnes and I am from the United States. I am a student studying Industrial Design and I am a bundle of nerves because there are portfolio reviews in my major where they cut students and I hope to not be one of them!

  • Hi 🙂
My name is Paola Alvarez. I’m from Puerto Rico. I’m also 22. I recently graduated from Interior Design and Decor and am now studying Industrial Design. In my free time I record videos for YouTube on my Urban Glam channel which distracts me from university stress. I’m aspiring to have my own business and I saw you as a great door to help me do so. Thank you for having the initiative to share with us your knowledge for our growth as designers also. I’m very excited to learn from you. I really like your techniques on drawing. I would also like to learn if possible how to create a good portfolio.

    • Hey Paola, how come you started from Interior design and switched to Product design ? It’s quite uncommon no ?
Beside that, the book of the Designer Starter Kit also have a Spanish version. In case you are interested, let me know.
About the portfolios, there is no unique way to make them. I have written a couple of article about it, you may have a look here: https://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/?s=portfolio – Hope it helps and have a nice day :).

      • Thanks! I understand English perfectly so the book won’t be a problem. Perhaps some of my friends might be interested in reading it in spanish. I’ll let them know. I’ll take a look at the article for the portfolio also, thank you so much.

As for my studies, I changed my bachelor’s degree because at the moment there wasn’t any for interior design so I thought product design would compliment that perfectly.

  • Hi Chou-Tac! I’m Lorenzo, an industrial design student from Italy. I have seen your works and they are awesome! I wish to become great like you. Keep up with your amazing work!

    • Hello Bobby,

My system tell me that you have already received the 2 first guides already. Can you check your Gmail account on the tab PROMO if you have one (Gmail has recently created a new version of interface with more tabs). Sometime the emails go there.

  • Hi, Chou-Tac, my name is Jason Lee from USA, and I am currently a graphic designer at a small private contractor company. I always want to do amazing stuffs with my passion in graphic design and illustration. Thank you for taking your time to this for us. And I’m looking forward to learn amazing knowledge from you. If you have time, feel free to look at my online portfolio site (jasleedesign.prosite.com), and let me know what you think.

    • Hello Jason,
I had a look at your portfolio. You make great pictures. Your work is neat and well presented. Appreciate to see your initial sketches of research as well. + I like your Octopus logo eheh.

There is something that may handicap your readers. If I am not wrong, you uploaded very high quality pictures of your work. So they take quite long to display. May I recommend you to adjust the display speed, you will make the recruiters’ visit smoother.
You might know that already: the screen resolution is 72 dpi. Keep your high resolution file for printing in 300 dpi.

For your resume, how about you make it more fun ? Be unexpected !
Even if a resume is made to be professional, you are first of all in a creative industry. Not many Graphic designers make original resume, so you can pop up from the crowd ;). For example why not display your logo on your resume ? It might give you more status.

Then you can also include some of your work in your Pdf file. Imagine that the recruiter print it out, he will have your work visible on his desk.

      Hope it helps 🙂
      See You Jason.

  • Hi, thank you for taking the time to do this and read about us. I live in Dubai and am studying to be a fashion designer.

  • Hello Chou-Tac. Thanks for doing this. I am retired but still practicing design. I always enjoying practicing various sketch techniques. I find, however, that I am doing more and more “sketching” in Solidworks. BTW, I have taken a couple of trips to Paris the last three years. They were the most memorable trips of my life. Loved it there and will be back in a year.

    • Hello Mecium,
I agree that sketching is a pleasure even though you use Solidworks, you enjoy making things from your mind. 🙂
Thanks for Paris. Where are you from actually ?

      • I am Jim and I live in Fort Collins, CO. I was an Industrial Designer for Hewlett-Packard and Agilent Technologies. I am currently retired but still working.

          • It is a great place to live. I’ve been here over 40 years. You are working in Singapore I understand. What kind of work are you doing? Are you there permanently?

          • I quit my last job to take some time for myself and the blog. After few years of travelling especially in China and Singapore, it’s time to take a break. I will be back in France soon, and see my family.

          • Beautiful area. It is on my bucket list as a place to visit. I am trying to learn the French language. It is a very difficult language to learn but I am determined to learn it.

          • Yeah french is not that easy, but people say its a beautiful language. 🙂 The best way to learn is to be there for few months, living with locals that are not good in english. That’s how my gf learned for 8 months (She’s from Singapore), and now we only talk in French !
            A bientot !

          • You are right. I am using Duo Lingo. I think it is far better than Rosetta Stone, and it’s free. But you need to be immersed in the culture and the language to effectively learn it. French is indeed a beautiful language. I am lucky in that my wife is a language teacher. Her primary language, after English, is German but she is also really good with French. And we have two close friends who are fluent in French and teach it as well.

  • Hi Chou-Tac…..I am DhananJay from India. I am an Mechanical Engineer and now studing transportation design….. I’m highly passionate about automobile and truly love its design process!!!!!!

  • A.G from South Carolina. Im a robotic technician at an auto-manufacturing plant. Im pursuing my bachelors in Comp Sci but will get my masters in ID. I enjoy the mechanics of a technician, but im a creative individual so i want to go into designing things that people use.

  • Ben here from the US. I used to sketch my ideas as a kid, then somehow lost it when people said my sketches weren’t good or there were “better ways” of communicating ideas. It’s been my personal goal to think through things visually again, and I find it much more efficient and enjoyable. I even created an app to help me learn it! So happy to read your clear and concise tips — thank you!

    • Hello Ben, yes sketching is a universal language.
If we are lost or we look for something in a middle of a foreign country, a little sketch can unlock the situation ! As you said, we communicate with fun. Tell me more about your apps :). See yah.

  • I’m Peter from USA, I have always been interested in design and for many years planned on going to art school. I love to draw but I am now a Patient Care Tech. at a local hospital. I believe that there is no difference between a building or a piece of a footwear, a painting, a pottery (all types of other art) because they are all organically connected and share a common interfAce. Thru this belief I was able to find this site! Thanks! 🙂

    • Awesome Rogelio ! I agree, everything is linked. That’s why it’s so fascinating. When you discover something, you realise that you can apply it in other domains. Exciting !
Hey, I had the chance to visit Manila and Boracay. Loved it !

  • Thank you for creating this starter kit Chou-Tac! It is a a very insightful guide. I want to be a shoe designer in the future. Most of what I know about design came from just sketching and thinking of how to illustrate a story through a design. Your guide is exactly what i need to learn how to approach sketching better!

  • Hii… I am still not a good designer. Learning from the the guys just like you. Will read the Designer Starter Kit and will come back to you to share more about design, me and my experience. Thank you.. 🙂
